A Great Big Thank You!

A great big thank you to all the wonderful people who gave up their Sunday morning to make a start on the tidy up of Bernards’ Place and the areas around the Comrades Hall. We thought we would end up with a few dumpy bags of waste but ended up with a skip load. It was a fantastic community effort. There are too many hardy soles to name everyone individually, a sincere thank you to you all.
All the play equipment is now open apart from the large swing which needs some further attention.
The baby swing has got to be removed as it does not meet current standards.
All the other equipment has had the work done to it rectify faults identified in the recent RoSPA report 🙂
There are lots of plans for Bernards’ Place and for the Comrades Hall being considered, as these plans develop we will share them with all of you for your thoughts.
With my sincere thanks

David Leader

Procession for Harry Isaacs 7.30pm This Evening.

Harry Isaacs, the young farmer who tragically lost his life earlier this week, will be celebrated this evening by a tractor procession from Mosterton to Beaminster Square for a Memorial service and tributes from family and friends.

As you’d expect, things are subject to change but the plan is . . .

  • 6.45pm – Marshall meeting in Beaminster Square.
  • 7pm – Procession gathering in Mosterton.
  • 7.30pm – Procession departs Mosterton. Slow drive.
  • 8pm – Arrive in Beaminster Square
  • 8pm – Tributes and speeches
  • 8.30pm – Candles lit and one minute silence.
  • 9pm – Start to clear the Square

Please remember face coverings and social distancing where possible.
The Highways and Police are informed and are in full support of this but would respectfully ask that the town is cleared by 9.15pm.
You are invited to bring “Flags, flowers, photos, banners, candles, cheers and good vibes for this special young man and his family and all of us grieving at this very sad time.”
A true and fitting tribute to such a beautiful young man with the biggest smile of anyone we’ve ever known.
Hearts together.❤️

Harry’s Tribute Page is HERE.

The fundraising page for a Memorial Bench for Harry (with any surplus going to his parents) can be found HERE.

Comet Neowise & Perseids

It’s your last chance to catch Comet Neowise before it goes back into the outer solar system and doesn’t reappear until 6,800 years!
The comet is currently about as bright as Polaris, the North Star, and can be observed in dark skies without the aid of a telescope or binoculars. Look East. The comet will appear underneath the Plough constellation, and just above the horizon. By the weekend, the comet will have moved so that it is directly underneath the Plough, as it moves further westwards and slightly higher on our horizon every night.

The beautiful photograph shows Comet Neowise behind St. John the Baptist Church in Broadwindsor. Photo credit: Jamie Dawson.

In our dark sky, there’s the chance you’ll see shooting stars too. These are the Perseids and these will be increasing each night until their peak on 11th/12th/13th August.  The Perseids tend to be very bright, so you can still expect a good percentage to overcome the moonlit glare.
In ancient Greek star lore, Perseus is the son of the god Zeus and the mortal Danaë. It is said that the Perseid shower commemorates the time when Zeus visited Danaë, the mother of Perseus, in a shower of gold.

Marie Curie Campaign – #Scrap6Months

Currently, dying people can only get fast access to benefits if they are told they have six months or less to live.
Anyone with a longer prognosis or an unpredictable illness faces a mountain of red tape: the gruelling process of applying for welfare benefits they need, interviews, stressful assessments and financial uncertainty.

Marie Curie are there for anyone affected by terminal illness, and to help everyone plan & talk about the end of life.  It is also the largest charitable funder of palliative and end of life care research in the UK and a leading voice in the UK calling for improved access to and quality of palliative and end of life care.

PLEASE HELP & SIGN THEIR CAMPAIGN – CLICK HERE.

Almost one year ago, on 7th August 20129, the Marie Curie Campaign handed in the #Scrap6months petition of 55,435 signatures to 10 Downing Street.  This followed the Government’s announcement in July 2019 that the DWP would review how dying people claim benefits.
In September 2019, Madeline Moon MP failed to get the bill passed even with full support from the Motor Neuron Disease Association (MND)  and despite an All-Party Parliamentary Group for Terminal Illness (APPG) having been in place since July 2018.

A Parliamentary Bill was presented by the APPG.   Six months on, Marie Curie called for the government to “find its heart” and scrap the six-month rule to make it easier for dying people to get the support they need and die with dignity.
Another six months further on and today a Private Members’ bill was presented by Jessica Morden MP who stated: “It’s wrong that terminally ill people are forced to spend their final months wrestling with the benefits system. My bill today calls for changes to an unfair system.”   She went on to say “In 21st century Britain we cannot tolerate a situation where our most vulnerable citizens and their families are forced to spend their final months together wrestling with the complexities of an obstructive benefits system.” Today’s bill was co-sponsored by the APPG‘s Chairman, Drew Hendry.

Mrs. Christine McCluskey has been the most recent person focused on by the media and the campaign.  Her disability benefits stopped four months before she died of lung cancer, aged 61 years and weighing only 20Kg.  Because Mrs. McCluskey had hobbled from her sofa to the door to let her assessors in – they said the terminally ill grandmother was fit to walk 200m.
