Full Moon – Friday, 5th May

This month, the Moon will be Full at 18.34hrs on Friday, 5th May.

Frequently referred to as the Flower Moon, other names attributed to this Moon which is full of the promise of summer are:

  • Leaf Budding Moon
  • Planting Moon
  • Egg Laying Moon
  • Field Making Moon
  • Frog Moon
  • Moon Of The Shedding Ponies!

Black Moon is not a well known astronomical term. In recent years, the term has been made popular by social media, astrologers, and followers of the Wiccan religion. It occurs at the time of the New Moon. You cannot see it! The sky is completely dark. A Black Moon frequently is used when the following occur:

  • 2nd New Moon in the same month – the most common type, occurring approximately once every 29 months.
  • 3rd New Moon in a season of four New Moons  – occur about once every 33 months.
  • No New Moon in February – occurring approximately every 19 years. This can only happen in February, as this is the only month which is shorter than a lunar month. When this occurs, both January and March have two New Moons, instead of just one.,  By this definition, the next Black Moon will occur in 2033,
  • No Full Moon in February – also occurring approximately every 19 years.  In this instance, there are two Full Moons in January and March, also known as a double Blue Moon. The next Black Moon by this definition will occur in 2037, while the last one was in 2018.

Please Support Sam Cochrane’s Charity Bike Ride

Local plasterer, Stewart Cochrane sadly lost his father in September last year.  Stewart’s son Sam, 29 years old, who lives in Oslo, is preparing himself for what has to be acknowledged as an awesome cycle trip raising funds for the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, a charity dear to all of us residing in rural areas.

Sam’s Grandad is obviously his inspiration
After losing my Grandad in September, I realised I had to do something would make him proud and combine his ´get up and go´ attitude which took him on so many adventures of his own.
If it wasn’t for The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, I wouldn’t have had as many years with him as I did and to them I am extremely grateful. Which is why it makes sense to combine the opportunity and make it an opportunity to help those who helped him on multiple occasions….. I figured the best way to challenge myself was by completing something extreme and a lot harder than I am used to.”

Leaving on Monday, 17th July, Sam is intending to cycle from his home in Oslo to Poole, Dorset where other family members reside.  His intended route is shown below.

An estimated distance of 2,200 kilometres (over 1,360 miles), Sam aims to complete the trip within 14 days, averaging 128km per day, stopping only for overnight stays.

As stated on the poster, Sam will be visiting Broadwindsor and in particular, The White Lion in the first week of August, to personally thank local supporters and share his experiences.

You can scan the QR code on the poster above or click HERE to visit Sam’s Just Giving page and make your donation to support the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

We wish you safe travels and good luck with your endeavour Sam! 🙂

Broadwindsor.Org Now At 3 Years

Broadwindsor.Org celebrates three years today 🙂 It began by informing people of the cancellation of events due to the Government’s instructions for everyone to Stay at Home. As our village went into isolation, takeaway dinners and food supplies that were available became important due to last minute changes either with people’s health or new government instruction.  The Sound of Music began on 26th March, creating a one ‘o’ clock socially distanced gathering which helped keep us all sane.

That seems soooo long ago now and soooo much has happened since that time: Familiar people left or lost, new people arrived and welcomed.  My sincere thanks to those businesses, artists and individuals who register and support the website. My work remains voluntary. Renewals at £15 p.a. are currently being prepared for those already registered. New supporters and donations are always welcome.

The recent warm sunshine optimises our day with fresh hope – Spring has most definitely sprung and Summer is on the way!

🙂 THANK YOU!

Editor.

Meet Miss Muffett

Walkers up Common Water Lane may have encountered this little pony already who moved into the village last week… after departing from the Isle of Wight.

The 11 month old Shetland pony is called ‘Miss Muffett‘ and her 15 year old friend ‘Pickles‘ both belong to Chris & Lesley Sewell – much to the delight of their 9 year old grandson, Haydon.

Look out for them having a stroll in the lane 🙂

Final Draft For Parish War Memorial

Broadwindsor’s War Memorial, inspired by village resident Adrian Gray and led by Councillor Andrew Frampton is almost complete…The main photo shows the final draft and the printers need 3 weeks to complete it.

There will be a QR code on the memorial which will enable people to find relations of fallen soldiers so we can then tell their stories on the parish council designated web page.

Memorial Site at Cross Keys

Broadwindsor Fun Group and village allotment champion, Bob Link will be planting many poppy seeds around the stone.
The official opening will be in June. A short ceremony will be held involving the three Armed Forces, the children from the primary school who will read the names of the fallen out loud before a bugler will play the last post and a 2 minute silence observed lead by Rev David Baldwin from 11 am on June 6th (D day).

Councillor Frampton stated “A generous donation of £250 from the Decloedt family in Belgium (the family of the spitfire pilot killed at Lewesdon hill) and £100 from the Broadwindsor Fun Group goes to funding 3/4 of the project.
“Villagers, relatives and locals are most welcome to attend the opening. The eagle eyed amongst you will notice a QR code on the memorial board. This will take you to a page on the Broadwindsor Parish council website and contain pictures, stories and backgrounds of some of the fallen soldiers . If you or any villagers have relations or indeed info on any soldiers on the memorial please send your info in so it can be stored on the web page for future generations to read about.
The year sixes at Broadwindsor Primary school will be using this story and the soldiers for a project next term and researching some of the men who are remembered .
Any questions or observations are most welcome through your parish councillors to the Parish council: hello@broadwindsorgroup.gov.uk.”

More details will be published when confirmed.

Clive & Kerry Dammert Excited To Keep The White Lion Roaring

Last week Chairman of our Community pub, Rick Dyke announced that  Clive and Kerry Dammert had accepted the offer to form the new Management team at The White Lion.

Most recently, Clive and Kerry have worked in Devon and Cornwall as a Management couple and have experience of both the pub and the hotel businesses. Both are at home either in the kitchen or as Front of House. Clive and Kerry have worked together as a team for over 10 years and are looking forward to bringing their experience to the White Lion.

Kerry commented “Clive and I are excited to be returning to village life and meeting you all. For the past few months we have been working in a hotel environment and realised that we missed the pub life and the connection to the community that comes with running a pub and we are very much looking forward to getting involved in the community.

Clive and Kerry previously owned and ran a successful business in South Africa.  Their plan is to offer good quality English pub food, using locally sourced ingredients where possible and then add some South African flair on the specials board, dishes like Bobotie, Bunny Chow (no rabbits involved!) and Vetkoek as well as a traditional South African Braai (BBQ) in the Summer. So much to look forward to – we very much look forward to welcoming Clive and Kerry into our community – Where Community Matters 🙂

Big thanks to the many volunteers who have worked front of house and in the kitchen.
They will continue to front The White Lion over the coming weeks until the transition over to Clive and Kerry at the end of this month.
Your efforts are appreciated!

David Leader, who’s untimely death on 13th March last year shocked the whole community, led the ‘Save The White Lion‘ campaign.  His widow Elaine commented: “Everyone who knew David will remember his passion for community, teamwork and pitching in. He would be so proud of the way this village has responded to the challenge to run the pub as a Community Pub in the true sense!”
‘I know he would be saying a massive thank you to all the volunteers who are giving up so much of their time, day after day, working for free, cleaning toilets, working in the kitchen, cooking meals, waiting on tables. Also all the huge amount of relentless work by the management committee and the planning and organising of all the events. He would also be thanking the bar staff for going out of their comfort zones and serving customers, giving up their afternoons and evenings.
‘And to the community in Broadwindsor and surrounding area for supporting the pub and making virtually every event a sell-out. It’s an amazing effort and it shows what an incredible community this is.
‘It would have made David so happy to see everyone pitching in and working together to keep our wonderful pub thriving.’
We couldn’t agree with you more Elaine and thank you too.

Please continue to support our lovely pub:)
