Clive & Kerry Dammert Excited To Keep The White Lion Roaring

Last week Chairman of our Community pub, Rick Dyke announced that  Clive and Kerry Dammert had accepted the offer to form the new Management team at The White Lion.

Most recently, Clive and Kerry have worked in Devon and Cornwall as a Management couple and have experience of both the pub and the hotel businesses. Both are at home either in the kitchen or as Front of House. Clive and Kerry have worked together as a team for over 10 years and are looking forward to bringing their experience to the White Lion.

Kerry commented “Clive and I are excited to be returning to village life and meeting you all. For the past few months we have been working in a hotel environment and realised that we missed the pub life and the connection to the community that comes with running a pub and we are very much looking forward to getting involved in the community.

Clive and Kerry previously owned and ran a successful business in South Africa.  Their plan is to offer good quality English pub food, using locally sourced ingredients where possible and then add some South African flair on the specials board, dishes like Bobotie, Bunny Chow (no rabbits involved!) and Vetkoek as well as a traditional South African Braai (BBQ) in the Summer. So much to look forward to – we very much look forward to welcoming Clive and Kerry into our community – Where Community Matters 🙂

Big thanks to the many volunteers who have worked front of house and in the kitchen.
They will continue to front The White Lion over the coming weeks until the transition over to Clive and Kerry at the end of this month.
Your efforts are appreciated!

David Leader, who’s untimely death on 13th March last year shocked the whole community, led the ‘Save The White Lion‘ campaign.  His widow Elaine commented: “Everyone who knew David will remember his passion for community, teamwork and pitching in. He would be so proud of the way this village has responded to the challenge to run the pub as a Community Pub in the true sense!”
‘I know he would be saying a massive thank you to all the volunteers who are giving up so much of their time, day after day, working for free, cleaning toilets, working in the kitchen, cooking meals, waiting on tables. Also all the huge amount of relentless work by the management committee and the planning and organising of all the events. He would also be thanking the bar staff for going out of their comfort zones and serving customers, giving up their afternoons and evenings.
‘And to the community in Broadwindsor and surrounding area for supporting the pub and making virtually every event a sell-out. It’s an amazing effort and it shows what an incredible community this is.
‘It would have made David so happy to see everyone pitching in and working together to keep our wonderful pub thriving.’
We couldn’t agree with you more Elaine and thank you too.

Please continue to support our lovely pub:)

Government’s Help To Save

Help to Save is a type of savings account. which is backed by the Government so your savings are secure. Anyone entitled to/in receipt of Working Tax Credit or receiving Universal Credit will get a bonus of 50p for every £1 they save over 4 years.

  • You can save between £1 and £50 each calendar month. You do not have to pay money in every month.
  • You can pay money into your Help to Save account by debit card, standing order or bank transfer.
  • You can pay in as many times as you like, but the most you can pay in each calendar month is £50. For example, if you have saved £50 by 8 January you will not be able to pay in again until 1 February.
  • You can only withdraw money from your Help to Save account to your bank account.
  • Bonuses are awarded at the end of the second and fourth years. They’re based on how much you’ve saved.

Your Help to Save account will close 4 years after you open it. You will not be able to reopen it or open another Help to Save account. You’ll be able to keep the money from your account.

You can close your account at any time. If you close your account early you’ll miss your next bonus and you will not be able to open another one.

How it works:

You can earn 2 tax-free bonuses over 4 years. You’ll get any bonuses you’ve earned even if you withdraw money*.
After your first 2 years, you’ll get a first bonus if you’ve been using your account to save. This bonus will be 50% of the highest balance you’ve saved.
After 4 years, you’ll get a final bonus if you continue to save. This bonus will be 50% of the difference between 2 amounts:

  • the highest balance saved in the first 2 years (years 1 and 2)
  • the highest balance saved in the last 2 years (years 3 and 4)

If your highest balance does not increase, you will not earn a final bonus.

The most you can pay into your account each calendar month is £50, which is £2,400 over 4 years. The most you can earn from your savings in 4 years is £1,200 in bonus money.
Your bonus is paid into your bank account, not your Help to Save account.

* If you withdraw money it will be harder for you to:

  • grow your highest balance
  • earn the largest possible bonuses

Withdrawing money could mean you are not able to earn a final bonus – depending on how much you withdraw and when.

Note:

  • Help to Save bonuses will not affect your Universal Credit payments.
  • Help to Save will not affect how much Working Tax Credit you get.
  • If you or your partner have £6,000 or less in personal savings, your Help to Save bonuses will not affect how much Housing Benefit you get.

You need a Government Gateway user ID and password to apply. If you do not have a user ID, you can create one when you apply.
You will be asked for your UK bank details.

Sign in to your Government gateway and go to https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/help-to-save/no-account.

Meet Ashleigh Smith Of Revilo Construction Dorset

This is Ashleigh Smith and he is the owner of Revilo Construction.

Ashleigh began his apprenticeship in 1998 for a small building company in Broadwindsor called ‘Broad Build‘.  He attended Weymouth College, completing his NVQ levels 1, 2 and with advanced craft in brickwork trowel occupations.

After 10 years perfecting his trade skills, Ashleigh returned to Weymouth College as a lecturer in brickwork.  When Ashleigh left the college, he relocated to Spain, working for a British company for two years and it was then he decided to branch out, work for himself and so Revilo Construction was born.

After 13 years of living in Spain, Ashleigh and his family made the big move to relocate back to Dorset so they may bring their children up in an English culture.

Consequently, Revilo Construction has also relocated to Dorset.  Already at work on some great projects, Ashleigh has a reliable, hard working team contributing to his work with exceptional craftsmanship.

Contact: 07821 240754 or visit the website HERE.

We welcome Ashleigh and his family back to Broadwindsor and wish them all the best for their future 🙂

Full Moon – Sunday, 5th February

The Full Moon is today at 13.30hrs.

Known by many as the Snow Moon as snow is generally found on the ground in most Northern Hemisphere countries during this time, it is also known as the Black Bear or Bear Moon: referring to the time when bear cubs are born.

About once every 19 years, February does not have a Full Moon, known as a Black Moon. In 2018, this was the case in most time zones. This can only happen in February, as this is the only month which is shorter than a lunar month. When this occurs, both January and March have two New Moons, instead of just one, creating a double Blue Moon. This will next occur in 2033.

Just like “Blood Moon” and “Blue Moon,” “Black Moon” is not an astronomical term. There is no single accepted definition of a Black Moon either. Some say every New Moon is a Black Moon as it cannot be seen.

Another definition of a Black Moon says that it is the third new moon in a season of four new moons, according to Space.com. The next date that type of Black Moon will occur is May 19, 2023.

Congratulations To Kate Staff

Ex-manager of the White Lion Community Pub Ltd., Kate Staff very recently collected the above award: West Dorset CAMRA Pub Of The Year 2023.

Judging had taken place during November and December 2022 when the pub was secretly visited by 9 individual judges on separate occasions.

As Kate, Chloe and Louise no longer work at the pub, the award is Kate‘s to keep and the White Lion‘s will have a copy to display display in the pub. Kate dedicated the award to the late David Leader. The Staff’s won’t be progressing to the next stage but the White Lion Community Pub Ltd. will and we hope Rick Dyke and the Management Committee succeed in employing a new manager of similar high standards 🙂

As the Management Committee and volunteers continue to keep the pub open whilst a new management team are appointed, we send our congratulations and best wishes to Kate, who soon begins her new employment in the kitchen at Broadwindsor House and to Chloe and Louise with their futures.
If you’d like to volunteer at The White Lion in any way, please get in touch with Andrew Hookings at: andrewhookings@yahoo.co.uk or Rick Dyke at: rickdyke59@gmail.com.

Please continue to support our community pub.
