Villager’s Allotment Takes First Prize

Bob Link, from Orchard Mead, Broadwindsor, took home first prize in the allotment category of the Melplash Show’s Annual Garden & Allotment competition.  The competition was cancelled last year.

Bob was praised by the judges who said it was ‘an excellent allotment‘ and ‘a lot of hard work has clearly gone into it‘ – they also praised his range of fruit and vegetables and a good use of companion planting. 🙂

The event was judged by the Mayor of Bridport, Ian Bark, his wife Anne and former society chairman Jo Sage. They were accompanied by society president Nigel Jones and society chairman James Vickery.

The winners received a voucher from Bridport-based William James & Co – manufacturers and suppliers of fruit cages, netting and garden equipment – and compost from Chedington Estate.

Stableyard Restaurant Now Open

After closing due to Covid issues in the kitchen, Linda Paget and her team are pleased to announce they are open again from today 🙂

Prevent Heat Stroke In Your Dog

Local temperatures today are forecast to reach up to 29 degrees and continue for the next few days. Bridport Neighbourhood Policing Team have issued a reminder to dog owners not to leave their dog in a car. Even with the windows partly wound down your dog can suffer from heatstroke and die.
Walk your dog in the morning or evening when it’s cooler to reduce the risk of heatstroke and burning their paws on the pavement.  The RSPCA suggests trying the ‘5 second test‘ – where if it’s too hot to place your hand on the pavement for five seconds, it’s too hot for paws to walk on.


The Warning signs of heatstroke are:

  • Is your dog panting heavily?
  • Is your dog drooling excessively?
  • Does the dog appear lethargic or drowsy?
  • Is the dog collapsed or vomiting?

Emergency First Aid for dogs:

For the best chance of survival, dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature lowered gradually:
  • Move him/her to a shaded/cool area.
  • Immediately douse the dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. If possible, you can also use wet towels or place him/her in the breeze of a fan.
  • Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water.
  • Continue to douse the dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle but never so much that he/she begins to shiver.
  • Once the dog is cool, take him/her to your vet as a matter of urgency.

Signs of burned pads:

Look out for the following:

  • limping or refusing to walk
  • licking or chewing at the feet
  • pads darker in colour
  • missing part of pad
  • blisters or redness

Full Moon – Saturday 24th July

The Moon will reach its full phase at 03:38am on Saturday, July 24th. The July Full Moon, commonly called the Buck Moon, is also known as the Thunder Moon, or Hay Moon.
The indigenous Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes region call this Moon the Halfway Summer Moon, or the Raspberry Moon. The Cherokees call it the Corn in Tassel Moon. The Cree Nation of central Canada calls the June Full Moon the Feather Moulting Moon  and the Mohawks call it the Fruits are Ripened Moon.

Because the Moon is full when it is opposite the sun in the sky, Full Moons always rise in the east as the sun is setting, and set in the west at sunrise. Since sunlight is striking the Moon vertically at that time, no shadows are cast; all of the variations in brightness you see arise from differences in the reflectivity of the lunar surface rocks.

The paint was donated by Bridport Building Supplies for which we are incredibly grateful.
This work took a week of hard graft and would have cost thousands of pounds if we had to pay for it. Many people have commented on how good the finish looks and it seems like a different building. I cannot thank all the volunteers who have given so much in scorching heat to improve Comrades Hall, one of the most important community buildings in our village. Thank you.“

Have You Seen Any Hedgehogs?

This chap was photographed in a back garden at Fullers, Broadwindsor last week and another Fullers resident reported observing a family of hedgehogs walking across his garden 🙂 This is marvellous news as hedgehog numbers have fallen by 30% in just over 10 years.

Last Call For Pub Questionnaires – 6pm Saturday 17th July

By now, most of the Community Pub Questionnaires distributed have been collected.  However, some haven’t due to illness, weather or a change of circumstances for the volunteers collecting.

It is clear at this early stage that the White Lion pub is both an asset and very much wanted by the community so don’t let your voice go unheard.

Anyone who hasn’t had their form collected is kindly asked to leave it at Broadwindsor Community Stores no later than 6pm tomorrow (Saturday, 17th July) for it to be included.

The results of the survey will be announced at the Public Meeting on 29th July at 7.30pm at the Comrades Hall when the proposal will be discussed further.
