Stage 7, Tour Of Britain Cycle Race – Saturday, 10th September

We have many cycle enthusiasts in our parish and many who cycle through. For the first time*, Dorset will be providing a warm welcome to both competitors and spectators later this year at the penultimate Stage Seven of the Tour of Britain, the UK’s most prestigious cycle race, on Saturday, 10th September.


Stage seven will take the riders from West Bay to Ferndown via one of the most stunning routes in Tour history. Stage seven will run parallel with the West Dorset Heritage coast before passing through Dorchester, West Lulworth and Corfe Castle.
The route then heads inland towards Wareham, Milton Abbas and Wimborne Minster and loops round into the heart of Ferndown town centre.

* While it may be the modern race’s first visit to Dorset, the county welcomed the Milk Race – a semi-professional forerunner of the Tour of Britain – on multiple occasions during the 1970s and 1980s.

Post Office Open Today

Despite National Industrial Action this weekend, Broadwindsor’s Post Office Outreach service will be at the Comrades Hall this morning from 10am – 12.30pm. Thank you to the guys from Crewkerne!

You can also stop and enjoy a cup of tea or freshly brewed coffee thanks to the Post Office Users Group 🙂

Bernards’ Place Crowdfunder Launched Today

A Crowdfunder campaign is being launched in Broadwindsor at noon today, Tuesday 23rd August to raise the £20,000 needed to transform the village green at Bernards’ Place.

The project will provide community open space, challenging and inclusive play equipment and physical exercise for all, right in the heart of the village.

‘The plan has almost three years in the making but we’re determined to make it happen,’ said Sheila Hawkins, who worked with the late David Leader to put the project together for the Comrades Hall, which owns the land.

‘It will be a fitting tribute to David, who died suddenly earlier this year. He made such a difference to community and sporting life in the village and brought everyone together.’

The village green scheme forms part of a successful bid to The National Lottery Community Fund. That secured grant funding of £84,000 in total, (including funding, from Low Carbon Dorset) and £45,000 has been allocated to the village green upgrade.  The remainder has funded improvements to make Comrades Hall more environmentally friendly, with the installation of 36 solar panels and an air source heat pump central heating system, which replaced the old oil-fired one, plus improved insulation.

Planning permission has been granted for exciting new play equipment for the upper section of the green (Read more HERE.).  At the lower end, the existing old swings will be removed and a new oak-framed shelter is being installed. The idea is to make the most of the opened-up space for community events and outdoor exercise.

Since the project was first mooted two years ago, costs have risen by around £20,000.

Margery Hookings, who is leading the Crowdfunder appeal on behalf of Comrades Hall Management Committee, said: ‘Fundraising events are planned but we really hope people and local businesses will support our appeal to meet the shortfall.

‘During the pandemic, when we could only go out to exercise, our village green became even more important to us as a community.

‘Bernards’ Place is something we all treasure. By reconfiguring the space, adding new, inclusive and challenging play and activity equipment, introducing exercise sessions and equipment for all ages, as well as staging community events, there will be something for all of us to enjoy, bringing together people of all ages and abilities, and helping to improve health and well-being.

‘It will provide an enhanced facility to keep our community physically active and encourage others, who don’t necessarily see themselves as ‘sporty’, to join in.

‘Local artist Donna Heys has again kindly created a “thermometer” to chart the appeal’s progress. As donations are received, the illustration will be coloured in, in stages, until we reach our target.’

Sport England has pledged £8,000 towards the appeal once the £5,000 mark has been reached. Payment of the grant relies on there being at least 100 unique supporters and reaching the £20,000 target.

The village has a strong track record of raising money through Crowdfunder. In 2020, Broadwindsor Cricket Club raised £35,785 to buy its ground, with 191 supporters in 27 days. Then, in February this year, campaigners raised £34,760, with 337 supporters in 28 days, to reopen The White Lion as a community pub.

Margery said: ‘We appreciate that money is tight and this new appeal might be a tall order after the successful campaign to save The White Lion.

‘However, through crowdfunding we have an opportunity to unlock potential extra funding, so any donation, big or small, will help the Comrades Hall enormously to replenish diminishing resources.

‘It is important to the village to get this project done. We all know, particularly after the pandemic, how vital outside space is to everyone’s health and well-being. This will make such a difference to young and old and all those in between, for generations to come.’

Broadwindsor and District Horticultural Show – Monday, 29th August

The village’s Annual Horticultural, Handicraft and Homecraft show is on the Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August at the Comrades Hall.  Open to the public from 2pm.

  • It is free to enter your exhibits*, or you can become a BDHS member for just £2.
  • Open to all amateurs irrespective of residence.
  • Show schedules are available from the Broadwindsor Community Stores.
  • Entry to view show entries on the day £1 (children free)
  • Refreshments, cakes and cream teas all available. A Raffle will be held.
  • Prizes, shields, cups and trophies all to be won 🙂

Contrary to comments made, villagers and parishioners CAN POST to this Facebook page.  Whether it be lost/found, local traffic/accidents, an event or anything that involves the parish.

Local businesses are also invited to post their events directly, providing they have paid their £15 registration fee.  Non-registered businesses are invited to register, else their post will be removed.

Full Moon – Friday, 12th August

August’s Full Moon is on Friday, 12th August at 02.36hrs so will appear slightly larger and brighter on Thursday evening. It is the final Supermoon of 2022.

This lunation is known as the Sturgeon Moon.  This is because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.

The Sturgeon Moon is also referred to as:

  • Full Green Corn Moon, signalling that the corn was nearly ready for harvest.
  • Grain Moon,
  • Fruit Moon,
  • Barley Moon,
  • Wheat Cut Moon 
  • Blueberry Moon.

August also brings us the most popular meteor shower of the year.  As our planet rotates the sun, every August, the Earth crashes into a cloud of debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle. As the debris burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere, it produces the meteor shower that we call the Perseids.

The Perseid meteor shower gets its name as it appears to come out of the constellation Perseus. They can appear from any part of the sky, so the more sky you can see the better.
They are active now and set to peak on 13th August. Enjoy!

BFG Offer Free First Aid Training For Locals

As our village no longer has the service of any First Responders, Broadwindsor Fun Group are organising two sessions, dependant on interest, of a one day course of Emergency First Aid Training offering you a nationally recognised qualification certificate valid for 3 years.

The first one day course is being fully funded by Broadwindsor Fun Group*.  It will take place in the Autumn and numbers are strictly limited to 12 places for each course.

The course is being run by MICAS Training Ltd. It is a one day Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course, certified by Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance.  In line with guidance provided by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the qualification supports workplace emergency first aiders for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course.

The course content:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider.
  • Be able to assess an incident.
  • Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty (including CPR and the recovery position).
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking.
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding.
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock.
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries.

Learners must undertake a practical assessment of their competence along with a knowledge assessment, where learners are required to provide a short response to a prescribed series of questions.

*The first one day course will be offered free of charge for members of the local community who are both willing & able to support events & general village first aid needs. It is no longer required that those who qualify from this one day course would have their names and their contact telephone number on display in the Comrades Hall.

Dependant on interest, a second course can be arranged for others at a later date, but a cost would be incurred by the learner.

Pub Is The Hub’s Support For The White Lion

The White Lion’s new kitchen was opened with the expert help and a Community Services Fund grant from Pub is The Hub. As they now increase their food service, they are planning to offer a takeaway menu too. You can already have one of Louise’s delicious puddings to take home if you can’t manage one after your meal 🙂

All dishes are home-made with locally-sourced produce, with meat and cheese supplied by Nick Tett Butchers, Beaminster and fish from Davy’s Locker in Bridport, and fruit and vegetables from Washingpool Farm, Bridport.

Manager Kate Staff (above) said: “The new food offer has been attracting more local people into the pub and helping to create connections. We had 36 farmers meet up on pie night which was a great way to get them talking and socialising.”
“Our vision is to make the White Lion the hub of Broadwindsor where everyone feels welcome.”

So what is Pub is The Hub?

Pub is The Hub is a not-for-profit organisation, which offers independent specialist advice to publicans on rural services diversification or the options for the community ownership of pubs, so they can all provide viable local services at the heart of their community.

With a proven track record of rural project development and delivery over the last 20 years, Pub is The Hub has worked with great publicans to open shops, libraries, cafes, community cinemas, allotments, play areas and much more. Since 2013, the organisation has also been able to offer small grants through its Community Services Fund.

Pub is The Hub has helped over 600 pubs diversify, with almost 200 of these benefitting from help through the Community Services Fund.

Building on its community services work, in 2018 Pub is The Hub conceived its ‘Join Inn – Last Orders for Loneliness’ campaign. ‘Join Inn’, specifically looks to support publicans and their communities to become better connected, helping local people feel less isolated and, in the process helping to alleviate loneliness.
