Tree Planting At Broadwindsor Allotments

Sixty tree saplings were planted at Broadwindsor Allotments on Sunday, 13th March 2022 by a very enthusiatic group of 1st Beaminster Beaver Scouts.

The trees were donated to the group by the Woodland Trust as part of the Queen’s Jubilee Green Canopy project, where community groups were invited to plant trees in community spaces across the UK through the Jubilee year, to create a network of individual trees, hedgerows and woodlands in honour of the Queen’s service and the legacy she has built.
This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.

The planting was carried out in conjunction with the Broadwindsor Allotment Group and the Broadwindsor Eco-Group, (many thanks to Sheila and Bill of the BAG for their assistance), and also helps the Beavers complete part of their badge work for earning a Community Impact award.

The Beavers not only learned how to plant a tree correctly, but also why native species (dogwood, dog-rose, hawthorn, crab apple and  hazel) are so important to local wildlife.
Some of the Beavers scouts live in Broadwindsor and/or attend Broadwindsor school, so it is lovely that they will be able to see the trees grow over time! 🙂

Even if you haven’t been involved in Scouting before, there is a warm welcome for those wishing to try Scouting for the first time in the 1st Beaminster Scout Group!

Full Moon – Friday, 18th March

March’s Full Moon is known as the Worm Moon, which was originally thought to refer to the earthworms that appear as the soil thaws in Spring. This itself leads to the appearance of robins, chats and other worm eating birds.

An alternative explanation for this name comes from Captain Jonathan Carver, an 18th-century explorer, who wrote that this Moon name refers to a different sort of “worm”—beetle larvae—which begin to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time.

There are other names for this particular Full Moon all of which herald the transition from Winter into Spring.  Such names include:

  • Crow Comes Back Moon.
  • Sugar Moon – marking the time of year when the sap of sugar maples trees starts to flow.
  • Wind Strong Moon – referring to the strong windy days that come at this time of year.
  • The Sore Eyes Moon – from North Dakota where the blinding rays of sunlight reflect off the melting snow of late winter.

Traditionally, each Full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not only to the Full Moon.

It’s a period of new beginnings. Look for the spectacularly bright Moon as it rises above the horizon this evening!

The White Lion – Update #11

The meeting of The White Lion Management Committee on 16th March opened with a period of reflection and silence following the terrible news of David Leader’s death. Like the rest of the community, the committee is devastated by the loss of this outstanding man. We are determined to realise David’s vision for The White Lion and work together to make it reality, as a fitting tribute to David.

Thought is now being given about how best the White Lion can remember David.

The following is a summary of the meeting:

Election of officers:

There was unanimous support for Rick Dyke as the new chairman and Margery Hookings as vice-chairman. She will also take over from Rick as minutes secretary. Charles Ouin to act as company secretary.

Feedback from Customer Workshop:

The committee is grateful to Dorothy Rowe for running the customer workshop, which was very well received. She will do a follow-up workshop in due course. Sandra, who is DPS trained, ran a licensing workshop. Kate will work to Sandra’s instructions.

Last orders will be called at 10.45pm, with drinking until 11pm. This needs to be consistent and can be monitored further down the line and can be extended for special occasions.
We will operate a ‘Challenge 25’ policy, a retailing strategy that encourages anyone who is over 18 but looks under 25 to carry acceptable ID when buying alcohol.

Kitchen equipment:

A list of kitchen equipment has been identified and is being sourced.

Trees on the bank:

Due to be felled on March 23rd/24th. Committee members and volunteers will be available on those days.

Refurbishment:

  • Grateful thanks to Pip Cadwell for doing a visual survey of the chimneys.
  • Malcolm Heaver is continuing his work on the back bar, with John Staff laying the stone in the hearth and slate near the bar.
  • John Heys is liaising over extra sockets, USB points and pendant lights.
  • Some furniture has been purchased and is being stored by a local resident in a dry outbuilding.
  • Dave Smith Heating and Plumbing, who was working in the village, promptly stepped in when water from a leaking radiator upstairs flooded the bar on Monday morning. He is not charging for the call out or his time. 🙂

The Management Committee now stand like this:

  • Rick Dyke (Chair)
  • Margery Hookings (Vice-Chair & Minutes Secretary)
  • Charles Ouin (Company Secretary)
  • Elaine Leader
  • Graham Small
  • Teri Small
  • Sandra Burrows
  • Luke Pickering
  • Andrew Hookings
  • Fraser Hughes
  • Chris Edgerley
  • Rick Dyke
  • John Heys

The Lost Pilot Ceremony

On Tuesday, 15th March 2022, a ceremony was held on Lewesdon Hill honouring Jean Verdun Marie Aime De Cloedt, the Lost Pilot, whose Spitfire aeroplane crashed into Lewesdon Hill one foggy day 80 years ago.

In the main photograph (L to R) –

  • Damien (Benjamine’s partner),
  • Benjamine, (Jean de Cloedt’s Great Niece)
  • Benjamine’s nephew (currently studying at Bristol University),
  • Aldon Ferguson (RAF Historian),
  • Heather Bunch (Doug Studley‘s daughter Home Guard),
  • Andrew Frampton at the back,
  • Rev. Jo Neary.
  • Knocker Wilson, representative of Dorset RAF veterans,
  • Clive Wakely (son of Jack from Home Guard)

From left to right: Jon Harvey (RAFA Standard Bearer),
Alan Kidson and Knocker White.

Supported by Knocker White, Bugler, Steve Chard changed from his
muddy wellies into his immaculately polished black shoes.

For those who missed it, or couldn’t make it up the hill, here is a 36 minute (amateur) recording of the full ceremony.  Unfortunately, the volume quality of the childrens’ poetry is not great as there was no amplification and a helicopter passed overhead:

Following the ceremony –

Several walked a further 500m up the hill with Andrew Frampton to view the actual crash site.

A Tigermoth aeroplance circled Lewesdon hill after the ceremony.

Unfortunately, the planned Spitfire encountered an oil leak and was substituted with this Tigermoth as this would have been the aircraft the pilot would have trained on, before being allowed to fly a Spitfire.

A piece of copper piping from Jean de Cloedt’s Spitfire made the plaque given to Benjamine by Andrew Frampton.

This image shows which part of the aircraft’s engine it would have come from.

Later in the afternoon, Benjamine and her nephew also visited Beaminster Museum where they saw the remains of one the wooden propellors from Jean de Cloedt‘s aeroplane.  Beaminster Museum open for their summer season on Good Friday, 15th April.

Thank you and well done to Andrew Frampton
who first brought Jean de Cloedt‘s name to a Parish Council meeting in November 2021 after a Covid infection had forced him to remain at home.  Then, with the involvement of the National Trust and others, this plaque is now in place for all of us to remember.

David John Leader, 24.11.1957 – 13.03.2022

It is with the heaviest of hearts to announce the sudden and tragic death of David Leader.

The Parish council described David as “An inspirational Parish Councillor, colleague and friend. The breadth of David’s active involvement in the local community including Comrades Hall, Hursey Common, the Community Shop, The White Lion, the Community Land Trust and School to name but a few is a true testament to his generous character and his passion for helping others….”.  A formal tribute will be paid to David at their next meeting on 21st March.

Our community is in shock.  The legacy David leaves behind is legendary. A valued friend of the Editor, our thoughts and prayers go to Elaine, Ryan and Rosie at this extremely sad time.  Arrangements will be published when known.

Elaine, who provided the lovely photograph, wants people to know they are so very grateful for the enormous gestures of love and support from friends and the community. “The flowers are beautiful and we are so grateful but going forward I think David would prefer for donations to be directed towards the Ukraine crisis.

The Lost Pilot Event – Wear Your Wellies!

The National Trust’s Coordinator has sent this message regarding tomorrow’s event on Lewesdon Hill:

We are looking forward to seeing the community at Lewesdon Hill tomorrow for the memorial service of the Lost Pilot.
Whilst the weather is looking like its going to be dry please be aware that the ground is still very, very wet and muddy and so for this reason please wear suitable, waterproof boots and wellingtons. Also, if possible please plan to walk from the village as opposed to driving as the field we allocated for parking is very damp and we want to limit (where possible) the number of cars traveling across it.
Thank you for your understanding.

Marshalls will be in attendance and there will be a tractor with a trailer to take people unable to walk up the hill to the memorial site.

Read more about the event HERE.
