Local Police Report

At Monday’s Group Parish Council meeting, PC Alex Bishop submitted a report giving much cause for concern and reiterates the necessity of staying alert.

  • Around the 8th September some building materials were stolen from the side of the road by a farm near Broadwindsor.  The remaining items were then moved to a shed, but then subsequently stolen from the shed a little while later.
  • Around the same time a quad bike was stolen from a premises in Drimpton.  The quad was parked on a driveway in view and not secured.  This is the fourth quad stolen from Bridport area over the last few months.
  • At some time between the 14th and 19th September, an isolated building at Broadwindsor Cricket Club was broken into and a mower and scarifier were stolen.
  • In the early hours of the 24th September, a person was seen on a gravel driveway in Seaborough.  When the resident opened the door they heard the person run off and a car drive away.
  • There was a report made on October 8th of a scam call from a person purporting to work for BT.  They attempted to get the recipient to grant them access to their iPad.  BT do not cold call and if there is any issue with your line, they would put it in writing.

PC Bishop stated “Please be vigilant with calls, especially cold calls, even if they say they work for a company such as BT.” PC Bishop had not yet been cleared to get back to face to face engagements at this time but reassured that he would let the relevant people know when he can start coming back to the Post Office/Coffee mornings.

More recently, Dorset Police say an ‘old-style’ cream coloured Mitsubishi was seen around the buildings at a farm in the Nettlecombe area near Bridport at 3.30am on Wednesday (October 14).

Dorset PoliceAs ever, please be vigilant and continue to report any suspicious activity to them on 101, or online at Dorset.Police.uk.

Be Alert To Suspicious Behaviour

There have been at least three episodes of suspicious behaviour in our area recently.  The theft at Broadwindsor Cricket club, Thorncombe reported two men and a van allegedly enquiring about garden work but looking into sheds and a resident in the Seaborough area was alerted to movement on their driveway at 2.30am last Thursday, a security light came on and footsteps were heard on their gravel. After opening their door, two people were seen to run to a car which then drove off.

According to new research from home security retailer safe.co.uk, only one in five invest in CCTV and, despite the increased sophistication and methods used by burglars, just 13% boost their defences with smart security devices and cameras.  Currently, only 41% of people use a safe to protect important documents, money, jewellery, or keys. A worrying one in five respondents still leave their car keys on display in a porch or hallway by the front door. A surprising 14% even hang them on a keyring in the front door lock at night.

Dorset PoliceDorset Police ask you to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to them on 101, or online at Dorset.Police.uk.
If you believe a crime is in progress, please call 999.

Draw A Pumpkin for Your Window in Half Term Holiday

The following idea is becoming increasing popular through the social media platform Facebook – there is no indication of who first posted the idea but perhaps they had inspiration from Rev. Jo with her Advent Window Trail.

Monday 26th – Friday 30th October 2020 is scheduled to be Half Term Holiday week with Hallowe’en on the Saturday.  With Covid-19, Government restrictions and common sense – Trick or Treating is not an activity to do this year.

Draw a Pumpkin!

Draw a pumpkin for Hallowe'enThere appears to be a lot of enthusiasm generated already – let’s have our parishioners, young and old join in and put a Pumpkin drawing in your window this October.  A reminder will be published a few days before 🙂

Take Part In An Advent Window Trail This Christmas

Our lovely Rev. Jo has had the most lovely, community spirited idea and needs your participation for the project to be a success. Here are her words:

Something I had been thinking about for Christmas was a community activity that wouldn’t be Covid 19 sensitive. It is unlikely, I think, that we will be singing carols in the pub this year for example and our community carol services in church would need to be different too. I wondered about an Advent Trail around the village with different window displays every evening in Advent.

If you have a little search around the internet you will find many different Advent calendar ideas from beach huts in Brighton to windows around villages in Nottinghamshire and everything in between. Perhaps if we choose a theme, maybe Christmas carols, make a list of 24 and then families volunteered to decorate a window according to the theme. Then every evening in Advent, perhaps as early as 4pm, the new window was lit up so we could come and look on our evening strolls.

You would need a window visible from the street, as we don’t want to encourage people to walk up drives, but I think we probably have lots of visible windows in Broadwindsor and Drimpton. The final window, 24, probably should be at the church.  I’m happy to coordinate the idea but need a bit of local interest to make it succeed. If you think you would like to be part of an Advent Window Trail this December in either Broadwindsor or Drimpton then send me an email to revneary@gmail.com and we can get planning.”
