Operating as a not-for-profit organisation, thanks goes to the Broadwindsor Fun Group who recently paid for a (desperately needed) replacement printer.  It is already being put to good use 🙂
Funds and kind donations received cover internet fees and administration costs. Additionally this year, Broadwindsor.org made a £25 donation to The White Lion’s fundraiser. There are no staff costs as the Editor’s work remains voluntary.

David Leader, a valued family friend, confidant, colleague and strong supporter of Broadwindsor.org, was the first to include his holiday accommodation to launch the organisation.  He will continue to be sorely missed for his friendship, diplomacy skills, humour, advice, encouragement and his inspiring ability to make people want to help him with whatever endeavour he was dealing with – and they were many.

Last Orders At The Comrades Arms – Tuesday, 19th April

A message from Andrew Hookings:

After six months since we re-opened The Comrades Arms, it is now time to call last orders. So, next Tuesday, 19th April will be our last night.
During that time a number of people from our community have volunteered to help behind the bar, and I thank them for all their time and help.
You, our customers have supported the bar and enabled us to raise almost £10,000 towards the refurbishment of The White Lion – so a BIG THANK YOU to all of you too.
I hope you will all give the newly furbished community pub – The White Lion at Broadwindsor, together with Kate, our manager along with her team of Chloe and Louise, all your support and I trust you will enjoy many happy times there.

Andrew.

Andrew leaves the village next weekend to spend the next few months in France with Margery. Margery will be providing an update on The White Lion next week, which is expected to include their opening date! Exciting times 🙂

We wish Andrew and Margery (& Edgar) safe travel and to them both…

A Great Big Thank You!

Emma House: Girl Guiding Hero

Leader of the 1st Broadwindsor Rainbows, 1st Broadwindsor Guides & 1st West Dorset Rangers, Emma House also holds the positions of County Growth and Retention Coordinator and West Dorset Outside Activities Advisor. An extraordinary accomplishment by itself.
Emma received a Girlguiding Hero award on the evening of Rememberance Day. It reads:

You are a Hero because…

you have gone above and beyond to promote Girl Guiding.your numerous posts on the Dorset Leaders Facebook group lifted the spirits of members during the pandemic. You rose to the challenge & took on the role of County Growth and Retention Coordinator. Whilst still continuing to post inspiring ideas on Facebook reminding us how to promote guiding locally + instigated a regular spotlight on a unit post. You have continued to run local units in your division during lockdown, arranged girl award presentations, promoted stories in the local press + led the way for the County to take part in the Bournemouth Pride Parade.

The Girlguiding Hero award is relatively new and Emma was unaware she had even been nominated or who nominated her.  All those nominated are put to a County Awards Council, discussed and decided upon who will get the award.

Well done Emma!

Broadwindsor Community Donates To Beaminster Food Bank

The team at the local food bank in Beaminster were delighted to receive products given at cost by Broadwindsor’s Community shop.

Shop manager Kevin with Chairman, Andrew Hookings loading up.

Kevin Madder-Smith, manager at Broadwindsor Community Stores had the forethought to contact Beaminster Food Bank to ask which items they were in short supply of before purchasing their list through the shop’s wholesaler 🙂

The Pink Piggy Bank

A big thank you to all involved…

Reverend Jo Neary and the food bank volunteers who coordinated with the shop’s team, but most of all, you, the customers for your spare change. The contents of the pink piggy bank which sits by the till was turned into essentials which the food bank lacked and little treats for local families in need.

Community Spirit 🙂

Letter Of Thanks To Fun Day’s Community

Good afternoon, my name is Kate Staff and I held the cake raffle at Broadwindsor’s Fun Day.
I would like to thank everyone that supported me in raising money.
My aim was not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness. I had never heard of TS (Turner Syndrome) until my daughter Louise was diagnosed at the age of 18yrs.
As a child she suffered and encountered numerous difficulties both physical and emotional some of which will be with her for life and if an earlier diagnosis was made she would have had a completely different childhood/education and friendships would have been a lot easier as she wouldn’t have felt as if she didn’t belong or fit in.
It was just by chance that our GP suggested she should be tested for TS and after reading all the signs and symptoms of TS, I was stunned to realise that Louise had roughly 80% of them. All of which were not detected by doctors/nurses/ENT specialists but most of all me!
I carry a strong feeling of guilt, that as her mother I didn’t do enough, as I always knew she wasn’t like other children her age and thought she may be on the lower end of the spectrum scale but then again no 2 children are the same are they?!
I have questioned myself over and over again “Why didn’t I know? Why didn’t I do something?” I can only put it down to lack of knowledge across the board so raising awareness has become very important to me. It won’t change things for Louise but if the signs and symptoms are known and talked about it might help others to get diagnosed earlier.

Thank you everyone 🦋 x
