The Lost Pilot Event – Wear Your Wellies!

The National Trust’s Coordinator has sent this message regarding tomorrow’s event on Lewesdon Hill:

We are looking forward to seeing the community at Lewesdon Hill tomorrow for the memorial service of the Lost Pilot.
Whilst the weather is looking like its going to be dry please be aware that the ground is still very, very wet and muddy and so for this reason please wear suitable, waterproof boots and wellingtons. Also, if possible please plan to walk from the village as opposed to driving as the field we allocated for parking is very damp and we want to limit (where possible) the number of cars traveling across it.
Thank you for your understanding.

Marshalls will be in attendance and there will be a tractor with a trailer to take people unable to walk up the hill to the memorial site.

The White Lion – Update #10

The White Lion Management committee are –

The management committee meets regularly as work continues on the refurbishment of The White Lion so it can reopen as a community pub. The aim is to open the bar in time for Easter with the first food offering a week or two later.

At the last meeting on 11/3/22, the following was discussed:

Membership:

Certificates issued to all original committee members with a further 100 on the membership register still to be issued.  Subsequent applications online will be incorporated into the register after 18th March when online applications close.

Customer workshop:

Village resident, Dorothy Rowe will be working with staff team and some volunteers from management committee.

Kitchen equipment:

Broadly aligned on what we need. There are a few different possible suppliers. Agreed to roll this over to next week.

Financial report:

  • We will ask Palmers for a current copy of the inventory and value.
  • Agreed to appoint a stock taker who will visit quarterly, provide analysis and help set prices.
  • Till system – appoint Electrotech at a cost of £22.50 per week. Data cable from bar to kitchen advisable.
  • Utilities – Paragon still working on a deal.
  • PaymentSent card machine will be integrated with till. CC charge – 0.95%. 0.37% for debit cards. Machine costs £15 per month.
  • Cellar training.
  • Meeting to decide on product range.

Palmers’ building responsibilities:

2 damp patches and broken slates.  Workmen have replaced crash lock on back door, looked at damp patches and think may need scaffolding to fix, replaced tiles. Need to borrow a drone to take photo evidence of source of leak.

Trees on bank to be dealt with – 23rd and 24th March.

Refurbishment:

Detailed discussions around the back bar. Wall behind bar has been prepared, panelling ready for painting, old door to rear corridor has gone and been filled. Slabs for hearth and continuation of passageway have been sources, floor needs levelling, paint needs ordering.

Kate has cleaned some of the wall lights and fitted dimmable bulbs. Lights for over bar and six dining chairs have been bought. Two large farmhouse tables, two leather easy chairs and a coffee table have been donated. Furniture being stored in a local garage. Double plugs plus USBs in hand. New radiator ordered.

This weekend’s profits (and Tuesday, 15th) from the Comrades Arms are being donated to the Ukranian Humanitarian Appeal.

Friday night, the Comrades Arms raised £250.00.
Palmers Brewery also donated a barrel of IPA, soft drinks and bottled cider.
Saturday night, the Comrades Arms raised £98.50.

Thank you to everyone in Broadwindsor parish who donated items to go to the Ukraine with Tom Littledyke next Monday 🙂

The second delivery was made yesterday.  Broadwindsor won’t collect any more until Tom returns and we are updated to the situation. In the meantime, Tom has sent out a request to decorate their vans:

“This Monday morning between 9am-12pm can I ask one final thing of you all. Please can you help us decorate the vehicles so that it’s clear it’s humanitarian aid we are taking. I can only talk on behalf of the vehicles I’ll be taking so please make sure to get permission from other vehicles if they would also want that. Write messages to the Ukrainian people, in Ukrainian if you can. I don’t mind what you use to do it. Permanent or non permanent methods. Sunflower drawings, anything. This will take place at the Shave Cross Inn 9am to 12pm when we depart for Ukraine. Thank you.”

T-Shirt With Village Slogan

As many will be aware the T-shirt logo poll closed recently with the slogan ‘Where Community Matters‘ receiving the most votes.  There were 2,768 votes cast with the winner receiving nearly 30% of them.

The sponsor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has stated that a small company StuartAusten.co.uk has been asked to research how and where the T-shirts can be produced.

Originally, the sponsor had stated that any profits for the sale of the T-shirts should be put forward to support the Save the White Lion fund. However, given the fact that this worthy cause has exceeded its target, it has been decided that the profits will go towards the purchase of a memorial for those lost in conflict.  At present no external memorial exists in the village.

Comrades Arms To Donate Profits To Ukranian Appeal This Weekend

The pop-up bar, affectionately known as The Comrades Arms will be donating all profits from their sales on Friday 11th, Saturday 12th and Tuesday, 15th March to The Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

The bar will be run on these nights by all members of the White Lion Management Committee.

Remember, you can take your items to donate to the Comrades Hall on Friday morning 10am – 12 noon.
Donations can also be taken to Fullers Community Hall, Thursday, 10am to 12noon and also Friday 10am to 12noon.

Well Done Broadwindsor

Thank you and well done to those who dropped items off at the Comrades Hall this morning for the Ukranian Aid project being led by Tom Littledyke at the Shave Cross Inn.

All of the items were loaded into Tom’s van ready for sorting and distribution prior to his trip next Monday. Read more HERE.

More donations will be taken across this Friday, 11th in time for Monday.  Please bring your items to the Comrades Hall between 10am – 12 noon.

Donations can also be taken to Fullers Community Hall, Thursday, 10am to 12noon and also Friday 10am to 12noon.

Tom’s Group are founding a Charity. The Order of the Shave Cross. They’d like to organize it as a group you join and on reward you’d receive a Personalized glass, personalized clicker and a Jacket (with monk accessories). Keep an eye out and you will be told when it’s live.

International Womens Day – Tuesday, 8th March

International Women’s Day 2022: this year’s theme is #BreakTheBias.

The organisation is calling on people to “imagine a gender equal world” which is free of biases, stereotypes and discrimination against women. The UN’s theme is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

Unable to meet up with your female friends? Here are 6 meaningful ways in which you can celebrate virtually on March 8th:

Purple, green and white are the colours of International Women’s Day.

  • Purple signifies justice and dignity.
  • Green symbolizes hope.
  • White represents purity, albeit a controversial concept.

The colours originated from the colours worn by the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908.

International Women’s Day was first established at the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. German women’s rights activist and Marxist theorist Clara Zetkin was the one who tabled the idea 🙂

This event is on Saturday, 19th November 2022 and focuses on men’s health, improving gender relations, highlighting male role models, and promoting positive expressions of masculinity.
