Broadwindsor Cricket Club Update & Fixtures

Broadwindsor Cricket Club have a lot going on before matches begin on May 1st.

They are busy readying the ground for the upcoming season with work starting on finally finishing the pavilion in the next couple of weeks. Solar panels are being fitted in March which will provide power for lights and hot water for showers.

They are also trying to have the speed limit reduced from 60-40 mph outside the ground entrance.  They then hope to negotiate and agree with Robert Tolley about renting the corner of his field for a new car park area.

Following the success of last year’s Fireworks event with Broadwindsor Fun Group, Broadwindsor Cricket Club will host the Fireworks event again later this year and are meeting with Andrew Hookings to discuss all the issues involved.

Supporters are always welcome and they have cold beers/ Lagers/ ciders and soft drinks for sale for those warm sunny afternoons.

Here are their fixtures for 2022 which can be downloaded as a pdf document for printing HERE.

The White Lion Saved NEWS UPDATE #8

Community pub campaigners at Broadwindsor signed the tenancy agreement for the White Lion Inn this week.

It took effect on Monday, 14th February and means that the Palmers Brewery-owned pub will become a community pub now that almost £50,000 has been raised through public donations and grant funding.

White Lion management committee chairman David Leader said: ‘Signing the agreement is such a significant milestone in our quest to open up the pub again for the community. It’s great news.’

He also announced that the new manager of the White Lion will be Kate Staff, who will be supported in running the pub by her daughters, Chloe and Louise.

We’re very pleased to appoint Kate and her daughters and look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.’

Kate, whose parents live locally and is well-known in the village for the imaginatively decorated cakes she creates for charity, said: ‘We are very excited to be part of this great project. We have family ties to Broadwindsor and have spent a considerable amount of time in the village over the last eight years and just love being here.
Our vision is to make The White Lion the hub of Broadwindsor, where people can come and feel at home, whether it be for food, drink or just a chat – everyone will be welcome.
As manager, I will be working alongside The White Lion Management Committee to make this a very successful venture. We look forward to making new friends and being a permanent part of this fantastic community.’

The pub, which is in the heart of the village, closed last summer after the tenants took over a pub in Somerset.
Unable to find a landlord to take The White Lion over, Palmers approached Broadwindsor Group Parish Council to see if the community would be interested in running it.
David Leader, who is the Parish Council’s vice-chairman, put together a group to explore the idea and then put it to the village at a public meeting.

A Crowdfunder appeal raised £34,760 with 337 supporters in 28 days. Further funding came from the parish council, Palmers, grants and other donations from the public. The money will be used to renovate the bar area, purchase kitchen equipment and supply working capital. It is hoped that the pub will be open in time for Easter.

The aim is to be modestly profitable but not for private profit. The White Lion will offer food and drink with an emphasis on local produce.  We will strive to create a warm, friendly atmosphere and want the pub to be a hub for the community to visit, meet in and carry out as many community activities as possible.

Locals are being invited to an open evening at the pub on Wednesday 23rd February, from 6-8pm, to look around the bar and hear about the refurbishment plans for a revitalised White Lion.

Said David Leader: ‘The local community and people further afield have been so supportive of the project. The response has been incredible. Locals have wholeheartedly embraced the idea of a community pub. There is still lots of work to be done but we’re looking forward to opening the doors and being able to welcome people inside The White Lion once again.’

Chris & Susannah Newall have left the White Lion Management committee which now comprises:

  • David Leader (Chair)
  • Elaine Leader
  • Graham Small (new)
  • Teri Small (new)
  • Sandra Burrows
  • Charles Ouin
  • Luke Pickering
  • Andrew Hookings
  • Margery Hookings
  • Fraser Hughes
  • Chris Edgerley
  • Rick Dyke
  • John Heyes (new).

Broadwindsor’s Map Revealed

A wonderfully successful afternoon was had at Broadwindsor’s Comrades Hall on Saturday, 12th February celebrating the local landscape and rural heritage of our village. The illustrated map “The Place We Love” by Broadwindsor’s Megan Edwards was unveiled by Broadwindsor residents, Barry & Denise Dennett (see below). Malcolm Heaver has been commissioned to make an enclosed frame for it to be displayed in the village square.

Another map had been created of local field names. The present-day field names were gathered by contacting local landowners and working with the online mapping resource, Dorset Explorer, volunteer Kenzie Bicher created a map which shows the field names currently in use.

The field map will be lodged with Dorset History Centre as a local resource for the future.

Village poet, Peter Roe, was “delighted with the work of the children” from Broadwindsor Primary school had their Nonesense Poems on display (Clicking on an image will open it in a separate window)…

The 1st Broadwindsor Girl Guides photographed what they loved about the community as part of a badge they are doing.

Local folk songs were performed with Amanda Boyd, Rev. Jo Neary, Margery Hookings and Donna Heyes singing the final song composed by pianist Andrea Monk, ‘As I Walked Forth One May Morning‘…

Village residents, Barry & Denise Dennett unveiled the map with a few words from Barry

Afterwards Margery commented: “I was really pleased with how the afternoon went. There was a lot of work that went into the whole project and input from willing volunteers. A real celebration of where we live and the place we love. Broadwindsor is a place where good things happen.”

Well done & Congratulations to all involved!

The Place I Love – This Saturday, 12th February 2-4pm

Broadwindsor’s The Place I Love project culminates in the unveiling of the village map at an event in Comrades Hall this Saturday from 2-4pm.

Local folk songs and field names have been collected as part of the project, which celebrates the local landscape and rural heritage.

A map showing field names around the village will be on display, along with photographs taken by Broadwindsor Girl Guides and a stand run by the village’s eco group, which has recently planted trees as part of the ‘Gurt Darzet Hedge’ project.

The programme for the afternoon will include a short introduction by villager Margery Hookings, who is leading the project on behalf of Windrose Rural Media Trust,  poetry by Broadwindsor resident Peter Roe and folk songs sung by Amanda Boyd, a member of the Windrose team.

The highlight will be the unveiling of the interpretative map of the village designed by artist Megan Edwards, whose family home looks out to Lewesdon Hill. The large, detailed map is a work of art in itself and will be installed in a central location in the village at a later date.

Tea, coffee and cakes are being supplied by and in aid of Broadwindsor WI. There will also be a raffle to help pay for the hall hire.

The afternoon’s events will be filmed by Windrose cameraman James Harrison and included in a short video about the project, the community and the local area.

The Place I Love project was launched on 16 October 2021 with an art exhibition and display of the 1840 parish tithe map. It is funded by Dorset AONB, Dorset Council and Broadwindsor Group Parish Council.

Megan’s lovely map will continue to be a lynch pin of The Place I Love, with a version made available online and planned seasonal updates.

The White Lion Is Saved – Thank You!

A massive thank you! Not only have we smashed our Crowdfunder target of £30,000 but, with your generous donations by cheque, cash and BACs – together with funding from the parish council, Palmers and takings from The Comrades Arms – we now have nearly £50,000.

It’s an incredible achievement, and demonstrates how important a roaring White Lion is to this community. Once we have signed the tenancy agreement, which is imminent, work will start on refurbishing the inside of the pub and kitting out the kitchen.

We hope to have more news to tell you very soon. In the meantime, stand proud, Lions, you’ve done brilliantly. 🙂
