Covid Booster Clinic At Beaminster Public Hall – Saturday, 13th November

There will be an extra Covid Booster Clinic in Beaminster Public Hall on Saturday, 13th November. 12.30pm – 5pm.
This will be a walk in clinic only, no appointments necessary.  You just need to:
  • have had your 2nd dose at least 6 months ago
  • be aged 50 and over.  be aged 16 and over with a health condition that puts you at high risk from COVID-19 and the NHS has invited you to book
  • be a frontline health or social care worker

Please note, this is at the Public Hall and not Barton House surgery.

We will take as many patients as capacity and vaccine availability allow, but I need people to be patient. You will need to wait, and potentially to be prepared to come back on a different day if necessary. My team have kindly agreed to give up their Saturday to try and help get people their jab, and we will try our best to help you but we can’t vaccinate West Dorset in one day! Please be patient and respectful, or we will have to revert to booked appointments only in future.
One final point, please don’t turn up to the Town Hall on a day when we are not operating as the Town Council will not be able to help you!
Mike & Team

If you haven’t had both doses of your vaccinations, it is not too late to book an appointment. Visit nhs.uk or call 119.

An Incredible Evening

Approximately 500 people flocked to Broadwindsor’s Cricket Club Pavilion last night to watch Broadwindsor Fun Group’s organised Firework display led by village resident & member of Broadwindsor Fun GroupAndrew Hookings.

Stewards were in place and worked ‘flat out’ for 3 hours, continually guiding people and their families safely in and out of the grounds.

The Fun Group’s Food stall had some people queuing for 50 minutes before completely selling out of burgers and hot dogs, almost exclusively cooked by Vice-chairman, Martin Burt with his trusty meat thermomenter! Delicious hot soups and mulled wine also sold very well.
The Cricket Club’s bar sold out too, with a quick trip to the Co-op required to stock up!

All those involved under estimated the crowd who attended and this has been attributed to local advertising; no other local organised displays taking place; the forecast of dry weather and admission was free 🙂

Special thanks must go to Margery Hookings who raised an astonishing  £743.07 in her special family collection bucket!

Incredible. I can’t recall ever seeing that many people in the village” was one local comment made.  David Leader, who worked with the BFG Core group on the food stall stated “I don’t think I have ever been involved in catering for so many people in such a short period of time.” Cars parking on the verges at Cross Keys and on the grass area at the front of Redlands Lane was not appreciated but thankfully were there for just one hour.

Broadwindsor House have posted lovely videos on their Facebook page – Click HERE & HERE.

A huge thank you to all involved and all who came along to support the event!

Following the success of this event, Broadwindsor Fun Group and Broadwindsor Cricket Club will have a debrief meeting with a view to holding the event next year.

Don’t forget…

This Tuesday evening at 7.30pm – Broadwindsor Fun Group are holding their Open Planning meeting to discuss 2022’s Jubilee’s celebrations and more fundraising dates.
All are welcome.  For more information and the Agenda – Click HERE.

The Bishops’ Kitchen – November 21

This month Richard offers two apple chutney recipes for Christmas…

INDIAN CHUTNEY

  • 450g cooking apples, peeled & chopped
  • 50g salt
  • 580ml malt vinegar
  • 450g soft brown sugar
  • 225g sultanas
  • 110g raisins
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tbsp freshly chopped red chilli or 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp curry powder

Method:

Place chopped apples into a bowl, sprinkle salt between the layers and cover.  Leave to stand in a cool place overnight & drain thoroughly.  Place the apples in  a pan with 140ml vinegar, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 mins.
Pour the remaining vinegar into another pan with sugar, bring to boil for 5 mins then add to the apple mixture.  Stir in the sultanas and raisins and cook for 10 mins.
Mix garlic, chillies, mustard, ginger and curry powder to a smooth paste with a little water. Stir into the apple mixture, bring to the boil then reduce heat and simmer gently for 30 mins or until thick. Pour into clean warm jars and seal. Makes approx. 1.3kg.

SPICY PLUM & APPLE CHUTNEY

  • 1 garlic bulb, thumb sized
  • Piece of fresh root ginger
  • 2 large onions
  • 1 kg Bramley apples
  • 3 star anise
  • 1 tsp cumin seed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 500ml cider vienegar
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 kg plums
  • 450g golden caster sugar
  • 4-5 sterilised jars

Method:

Prepare the ingredients.  first peel the garlic clove and cut into slivers. Peel and thunly shred the ginger. Halve, peel & thinly slice the onions, then put them into a large saucepan with the garlic and ginger. Peel, core and chop the apples, then add them to the pan with spices, vinegar and salt. Bring to the boil over a gentle heat. give everything a good stir then turn down the heat, cover the pan and simmer for 30 mins until the apples are cooked and pulpy.
Stone and quarter the plums then add to the cooked apples with the sugar.  Stir well and leave to bubble away, uncovered for another 40 mins, stirring regularly until the plums are cooked but still retain some of their shape.  Ladle into jars and seal. The chutney is best kept for about a month before eating as the vinegar needs time to mellow.

All recipes are from village resident, Richard Childs.

Happy Hallowe’en!

Hallowe’en! Also All Hallows Eve, All Saints Eve and Samhain. Many Hallowe’en traditions are influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly Samhain. Samhain marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.
It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off their spirits.

November 1st is All Saints’ Day, also known as All Hallows’ Day, the Feast of All Saints, the Feast of All Hallows, the Solemnity of All Saints and Hallowmas. Recognised and celebrated by the Christian church when they honour of all the saints of the church, whether they are known or unknown.

The ‘Go A Little Batty‘ card (main photo) was left in the Comrades Hall Servery with the following written inside:

Thank you Broadwindsor Brownies, Guides & Rangers!

In Broadwindsor this Hallowe’en, there is much going on… Please click on the event for more information.

Open at 9am – The Stableyard Restaurant is serving Hallowe’en cupcakes and skeleton ginger bread men alongside their delicious menu.

Other Hallowe’en activities include:

  • trick-or-treating – discouraged due to Covid,
  • attending Hallowe’en costume parties – with covid precautions in place,
  • carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns,
  • lighting bonfires,
  • apple bobbing,
  • divination games,
  • playing pranks,
  • visiting haunted attractions,
  • telling scary stories,
  • watching horror films.

Enjoy a spooky time!
