Big Butterfly Count Is Down 34% In 2020

This year’s Big Butterfly Count took place between 17th July – 9th August 2020. In all, during this year’s Big Butterfly Count, over 1.4 million butterflies were counted across the UK.

Worryingly this summer’s Count has seen a reduction in the average number of butterflies logged per count of -34% in comparison with 2019 and the lowest average number of butterflies logged overall since the event began eleven years ago. Encouragingly, 2020 also saw the highest number of butterfly sightings ever submitted by the general public with 111,628 participants submitting a record-breaking 145,249 counts this year, an increase of 25% on 2019.

Butterflies and moths are incredibly valuable indicators of the health of our environment. Their declines show not only the effects of human behaviour on the world around us but also the changing patterns of our weather. As well as being important and beautiful creatures in themselves, they play key roles in the ecosystems of birds, mammals, invertebrates and plants as food, population controllers and pollinators. Their conservation is vitally important.

Be Alert To Suspicious Behaviour

There have been at least three episodes of suspicious behaviour in our area recently.  The theft at Broadwindsor Cricket club, Thorncombe reported two men and a van allegedly enquiring about garden work but looking into sheds and a resident in the Seaborough area was alerted to movement on their driveway at 2.30am last Thursday, a security light came on and footsteps were heard on their gravel. After opening their door, two people were seen to run to a car which then drove off.

According to new research from home security retailer safe.co.uk, only one in five invest in CCTV and, despite the increased sophistication and methods used by burglars, just 13% boost their defences with smart security devices and cameras.  Currently, only 41% of people use a safe to protect important documents, money, jewellery, or keys. A worrying one in five respondents still leave their car keys on display in a porch or hallway by the front door. A surprising 14% even hang them on a keyring in the front door lock at night.

Dorset PoliceDorset Police ask you to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to them on 101, or online at Dorset.Police.uk.
If you believe a crime is in progress, please call 999.

Bernards’ Place Trough Now Filled

The village trough in Bernards’ Pace has now been planted up.  Chairman of the Comrades Hall Committee, David Leader (pictured on the left) said:

“Most of the plants were donated by Colin and Valerie Lawrence from Burstock for which we are incredibly grateful. A few including bulbs were sourced from Little Groves, Beaminster at a discounted price.  We are going to plant some bulbs in front of the picket fence by the pump to add to the visual appearance.”

Trough at Bernards' Place

“This is a Comrades Hall committee initiative to improve the appearance of Bernard’s Place, this is just the start of a long plan of improvements.

Huge thanks goes to Ruth Stevens (centre) who has volunteered to take on the ongoing care for the trough and Morgan Napier (right) for helping out at every stage of the venture.”

Well done everybody!

Full Moon on Thursday, October 1st

The first of two Full Moons this month, this is the Harvest Moon.

Most years, the Harvest Moon occurs in September but approximately every 3 years it occurs in October. The majority of sources state that the Full Moon names originate from ancient Native American tradition. There are others who point out that Harvest month was recorded as early as in the 700’s in both Anglo-Saxon and Old High German languages.

As the Moon rises from the horizon around sunset, it may appear larger and more orange which is quite apt for the season. It’s the location of the moon near the horizon that causes the Harvest Moon – or any full moon – to look big and orange in colour.  For several evenings, the moonrise comes soon after sunset. This creates an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening, which was a traditional aide to farmers and crews harvesting their summer-grown crops. Hence, the ‘Harvest’ Moon.
