Beaminster Area ECO Group Need Assistance This Weekend

Broadwindsor Co-ordinators of Beaminster Area ECO Group, Sheila Hawkins & June Ruffle have a request:

We are contacting you to ask if you would like to take part in a hedge-planting session at Burstock Grange just outside Broadwindsor. The Beaminster Area ECO Group has been invited to help plant 1,500 mixed tree whips to create a double hedge.

This will take place over the weekend of 4th/5th December, between 10.00am-3.00pm on Saturday and continuing, if necessary, on Sunday afternoon from 2.00pm.

Refreshments and instructions will be provided. The weekend of 11th/12th December will be held in reserve should the weather on 4th be too awful. If possible, please bring a spade and gardening gloves, and wear wind /waterproof clothing and wellies/boots.

Please let us know if you will be available to help, even for part of the time. Once we know how many of us there will be, we will send out further details, parking arrangements, etc.

We hope you can join in this community effort to benefit nature, and look forward to hearing from you.

Bunting For Jubilee 2022

Can you help make the 2022 Platinum Jubilee Weekend really special for Broadwindsor?

Village resident, Parish Councillor and member of Broadwindsor Fun Group, Jacqui Sewell is at the helm of our village’s Bunting Project for our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations next June.

Jacqui, who is known to be proficient with her sewing machine skills through her work at local craft fairs and with Dawn Newberry at Dorset Designers on Facebook, has this request:

Will you help me make fabric bunting as it would have been in the 1950’s, not noisy plastic flags flapping in the breeze? I want to recycle – repurpose – reuse as much as possible!

  • Do you have any cotton fabric (flowers, abstract, plain) that you could donate?
  • Are you able to cut out triangles (template provided)?
  • Or could you fix the triangles onto the tape ready for sewing?
  • Perhaps you could sew up the triangles?

If you can help in any way please telephone me on 01308 867145. I’m also starting monthly Bunting Workshops at the Post Office on 2nd Friday of every month beginning on 14th January 2022

– Jacqui Sewell

Telephone Box Book Exchange Update #2

The old telephone box in the village is being renovated.  Chris Edgerly is leading on this and has already started to repair the door which is in poor condition.

Like all projects there is much more to it than would at first be imagined. The project will take until the end of this year and then we will have a wonderfully restored piece of architectural history.

Afterwards, it will continue to operate as a library for the use of all the community.
As always considerable thanks goes to Chris for his hard work and expertise.

Telephone Box Book Exchange Update

Broadwindsor’s Telephone Box, which has been operating as a Book & DVD Exchange, was recently formerly adopted by our Parish Council.  Sadly, people continue to leave bags and piles of magazines on the floor of the telephone box – they are not suitable at all: creating mouldy paper and an unpleasant experience for anyone entering the telephone box.  Please show our Telephone Book Exchange some respect.

Chris Edgerley – March 2021

This week, all the mouldy magazines were removed and the books boxed up as work begins on fitting proper shelves inside and painting the exterior.

The work is being carried out on a voluntary basis by village resident Chris Edgerley, who rebuilt the ammonite wall in Bernards’ Place in the Spring of this year.

Today Is World Suicide Prevention Day

Every year on 10th September since 2003, organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.

In the UK, men are three times as likely to die by suicide than women. In the Republic of Ireland, the rate is four times higher among men than women.  While there has been a reduction in the number of people completing suicide over the last ten years, the numbers are still worryingly high.

One in every 100 deaths worldwide is the result of suicide. It can affect every one of us. Each and every suicide is devastating and has a profound impact on those around them. However, by raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide and encouraging well-informed action, we can reduce instances of suicide around the world. World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of suicide and to promote action through proven means that will reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts globally.

Suicidal thoughts are complex. The factors and causes that lead to suicide are complex and many. No single approach works for everyone. The COVID-19 Pandemic has contributed to increased feelings of isolation and vulnerability.

You can help give someone hope by showing that you care. All of us can play a role, no matter how small. We may never know what we do that makes a difference. We all can reach in and ask somebody. You do not need to tell them what to do or have solutions, but simply making the time and space to listen to someone about their experiences of distress or suicidal thoughts can help. Small talk can save lives and create a sense of connection and hope in somebody who may be struggling.

To prevent suicide requires us to become a beacon of light to those in pain. You can be the light.

Please support @samaritans this  World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day – call 116 123 or Text SHOUT to 85258.

Thank You For Your Hard Work

“A massive thank you to Chris Edgerley, John Hayes, Ruth Stevens, Jamie Dawson, Morgan Napier, and George Calverly for all their fantastic work in painting Comrades Hall with 3 coats of Sandtex paint.
The paint was donated by Bridport Building Supplies for which we are incredibly grateful.
This work took a week of hard graft and would have cost thousands of pounds if we had to pay for it. Many people have commented on how good the finish looks and it seems like a different building. I cannot thank all the volunteers who have given so much in scorching heat to improve Comrades Hall, one of the most important community buildings in our village. Thank you.

The weather was glorious and a lot was accomplished on Saturday when volunteers helped clear invasive plants from the wildflower meadow at Hursey…

Sheila Hawkins.

Conservation Volunteers Meet At Hursey Common – Thursday, 15th July

Very recently confirmed, Nick Gray, Conservation Officer for West Dorset’s Wildlife Trust will be at Hursey Common tomorrow (St. Swithin’s Day), July 15th and is calling out for local volunteers to join in…

“Dear All,
I hope this finds you well and relishing sunny prospects. We meet this week on St Swithin’s Day, July 15th, a day steeped in folklore and hay-making tradition… appropriately enough, as it turns out, because we’ll be swinging scythes and raking up arisings from a couple of species-rich patches at Hursey Common, near Broadwindsor.
You might think it’s a bit early to be cutting wildflowers off at the knees but I don’t have to tell you guys there’s always a balance with the more boisterous species, and cutting some areas slightly earlier will prevent weed species seeding and, as our aim is only to cut between a third and half of the target areas, begin a rotational cutting pattern that will tempt the flowering season to continue well into the autumn. Justification enough, I hope, and I’ll look forward to seeing you for a bit of mowing or raking or both.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you can make it so I can keep an eye on numbers as there may be a few local volunteers along to join us too. And, with apologies for another truncated day, we’ll be finishing around lunchtime again this week. But, in the sunshine’s honour, some of us can start a bit earlier too…

Please meet at Hursey Common – as on the map, or grid ref ST434026. There is a parking area on Hursey Common where there’s plenty of room. There are two patches to tackle, one next to the car park and one down the road, so if anyone who’s keen to do some mowing can arrive a bit earlier than usual at 9am, we can get a head start before rakers arrive at normal time of 10am… When you reply, if you could let me know your preference, I can manage tools too. If anyone has a rake or pitchfork they can bring along, that would be brilliant. And don’t forget gloves for the attendant nettles and thistles.

Also below is the Coronavirus Consent form that you may know about by now. Anyone who hasn’t already done so, please fill it in and email back to me, or if that’s tricky, I’ll bring along some paper copies. But please do have a look at it before the day. (Anyone who HAS already filled one in, I’ll bring your form along so you can just sign and date for this week…)

Don’t forget your drinks and snacks as I fear we still can’t share just yet.

Very many thanks as always, I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes,
Nick”
