Full Moon – Saturday, 10th September

Rising just after 8pm on Saturday evening, the Full Moon will brighten our skies. While September’s Full Moon is usually known as the Harvest Moon, if October’s Full Moon happens to occur closer to the autumnal equinox (September 23rd) than September’s, it takes on the name “Harvest Moon” instead. In this case, September’s Full Moon is referred to as the Corn Moon.

A transitional time between summer and autumn – many of the names (with the associated tribe) for this Full Moon reflects this:

  • Autumn Moon (Cree)
  • Falling Leaves Moon (Ojibwe)
  • Leaves Turning Moon (Anishinaabe)
  • Moon of Brown Leaves (Lakota)
  • Yellow Leaf Moon (Assiniboine)

Other Indian tribes would refer to this moon as:

  • Moon When the Plums Are Scarlet (Lakota Sioux)
  • Moon When the Deer Paw the Earth (Omaha)
  • Moon When the Calves Grow Hair (Sioux)

More Donations Needed Please For Bernards’ Place Project

Villagers will have noticed the scaffolding erected at the weekend as the shelter in Bernards’ Place begins to take shape.

Village residents, Chris Edgerley, Malcolm Heaver, Sophie Sinton, Ian Studley and Graham Paget are to be thanked for all their voluntary labour.

The Broadwindsor Village Green Appeal Crowdfunder has another 15 days to run.  At the time of publishing, £2,528 has been raised so far of their £20,000 target. If they manage to get to £5,000, Sport England will pledge a further £8,000.

Thanks to those who have already donated. More pledges are needed! It doesn’t have to be a huge donation (two children donated their pocket money), because it all adds up, and the more supporters they have, the better 🙂  If you know of family, friends or businesses who might donate, please send them the link. Thank you!

Meet Jeremy Noble – Thursday 15th September

Everyone is invited to the W.I.’s meeting on 15th September when they will be delighted to welcome Jeremy Noble (pictured above) for a reading from his novel, Russian Ending at the Comrades Hall.

Our lovely village of Broadwindsor features significantly as a location in the book (even the WI gets a mention!), which is about an investment manager (Edward “Ned” Lumley) who gets involved with a Russian family whose money comes from the diamond industry.  Lies and deceit ensue, but from which side?

Following the reading, Jeremy will be happy to take your questions and sign any copies of the book you bring along.
A Russian Ending is available from bookshops and can be purchased on Amazon HERE.

There will be a small entry fee of £5 for non-members. All profits from the evening will go to a Ukrainian charity.

As you’d expect being hosted by the W.I., delicious refreshments will be available 🙂

Changes & Continuity At Broadwindsor Community Stores

Sadly, Mike Moles, the recently appointed manager at Broadwindsor Community Stores is unable to continue with the position and has tendered his resignation. Once again a new manager would have to be found…

Broadwindsor Community Stores has seen many changes over its almost ten years of trading but it has had one positive constant: Jane Sloman.

If you’re a regular, Jane will most likely greet you by your name, know what you like and if you ask her about anything in the shop, she most likely will have the answer. Talk to anyone who uses the village shop and they not only know Jane but think highly of her.

Sue Williams, 2015

I remember my interview like it was yesterday,’ she said. ‘The shop wasn’t open yet so Sue Williams, the first manager, and I sat on a couple of upside-down crates in the empty shop to do the interview.

And I got the job! Haven’t looked back since!

After ten years of being a valuable shop assistant Jane has now accepted to take on the manager’s role, much to the shop committee’s delight and no doubt the whole community.

Andrew Hookings, Chairman of Broadwindsor Community Stores, said: “Jane has been with us since the shop opened in March 2013. She is very popular with volunteers and customers alike.  The community knows Jane has had a tough time over the last couple of years, and she has thankfully come through. Jane richly deserves this opportunity.”

The shop committee is now looking for a part-time shop assistant to help Jane and work alongside her colleague, Margaret, as well as with the volunteers who together make the Broadwindsor Village Shop team. The part-time shop assistant role will be on a temporary basis whilst Jane settles into her new role with the aim of being a permanent position.
Anyone interested in the position is asked to please email andrewhookings@yahoo.co.uk directly.

Good luck for your future Mike
& Well done Jane 🙂

Stage 7, Tour Of Britain Cycle Race – Saturday, 10th September

UPDATE:

We have many cycle enthusiasts in our parish and many who cycle through. For the first time*, Dorset will be providing a warm welcome to both competitors and spectators later this year at the penultimate Stage Seven of the Tour of Britain, the UK’s most prestigious cycle race, on Saturday, 10th September.

Stage seven
will take the riders from West Bay to Ferndown via one of the most stunning routes in Tour history. Stage seven will run parallel with the West Dorset Heritage coast before passing through Dorchester, West Lulworth and Corfe Castle.
The route then heads inland towards Wareham, Milton Abbas and Wimborne Minster and loops round into the heart of Ferndown town centre.
For any questions or enquiries about the Tour please email: dorsettour22@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk or visit the website HERE.
* While it may be the modern race’s first visit to Dorset, the county welcomed the Milk Race – a semi-professional forerunner of the Tour of Britain – on multiple occasions during the 1970s and 1980s.
