Update From Broadwindsor Fun Group

A letter from Adrian Gray, Chair of Broadwindsor Fun Group:

 Dear All,

The sun is shining and this has led me to reflect on how our plans for the event planned for Broadwindsor’s Fun Day on Saturday, 14th August are progressing.

I am very pleased to announce great progress and even more importantly that we now have a new treasurer appointed after David Taylor decided, after years of service, to stand down. I am grateful for his guidance and work to keep the finances healthy.  Similarly I am very pleased to welcome Michele Williams aboard. Michele’s association with the village dates back to 1968 when her family purchased the Old Schoolhouse. She will be moving into the village as soon as maintenance work is complete but Michele is already working hard to make sure a transfer of funds and authorisations with the bank are sorted.

As for the day itself,

  • Strawberry Jam the Children’s entertainer has confirmed that she will be there.
  • We can also confirm that Nina Garcia (originally booked for last year’s cancelled Fun Day) will be performing.
  • Sadly Shelby’s Elbows were unable to reconfirm their booking so after a lot of research and negotiation, we have booked Bill & Ben from the Leggomen to perform to close the day.
Both performers have YouTube videos should you wish to listen to them before the day.
  • We are pleased to announce that not only will the local Girl Guides will be leading a Trail event open to all but also
  • That the Broadwindsor W.I. have agreed to do the refreshments on the day.
  • There will be some Classic Cars in attendance.
Interested parties should address their enquiries to: bwfundaycars@gmail.com.
  • Molly reports that bookings for stalls are selling well so if you should want a stall, which is not restricted to art & craft, please do not delay in contacting her at: handcraftedbymolls@gmail.com.
  • We have arranged for those running the BBQ this year to undergo a Food Safety course, particularly important given the current environment, so we can be confident that everyone is safe.
  • Our pub, The White Lion too has confirmed their support. We sincerely hope that Vikki & Spike are still here with us to share the day.
  • There will be a small raffle on the day with Hampers as prizes.
This has been intentionally kept small to not take too much time and more importantly, it was felt the one of the aims of the event was to support local businesses and thus they should not be asked for prize donations. They have all had a hard time lately and we wanted to show support and provide a platform for them to display their wares.

Whilst there is still much work to be done to ensure that the day runs as well as possible, it is good to have a day to look forward to so please ensure that it is firmly in your diary. Saturday, 14th August 2021.

Full Moon on Tuesday, 27th April

April brings a Full Pink Moon. It is also the first of two Supermoons this year. A Supermoon is a Full Moon that will appear to be slightly larger than usual. The second Supermoon will occur next month.

This name is not because the Moon will be pink in colour. It comes from the pink moss, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the Spring in North America. Other names for this month’s Full Moon, all of which indicate the season, include:

  • Full Sprouting Grass Moon
  • Egg Moon
  • Full Fish Moon, among coastal tribes because this was the time that the fish swam upstream to spawn.

At the same time, April is a time when rivers and streams begin to fully thaw. Accordingly, April’s Full moon was:

  • Full Melting Moon, by the Shoshone tribe.
  • Moon Where Ice Breaks in the River, by the Arapaho tribe.
  • Sugar Maker Moon, by the Abenaki tribes
  • Sugarbush Moon, by the Ojibwe tribe. The Ojibwe tribe would journey north to their spring camps to tap maple syrup and engage in spear fishing. Maple syrup was integral to Ojibwe culture: not only was it a crucial method of seasoning all their foods (they did not have access to salt at that time), but it also symbolized harmony within the community and with the forces of nature around them.

In other religions:

Usually for Christians it is the Paschal Moon, and celebrate the first Sunday after April’s full moon as Easter Sunday. It’s possible that the reason why the Easter Bunny brings eggs is because April’s full moon is also known as the Egg Moon, given that animals such as geese begin mating and laying eggs in Spring. This year, the Paschal Full Moon fell on 28th March.

In Islamic communities around the world, April’s full moon is celebrated as Bara’at Night, also known as the Night of Innocence. Muslims offer up prayers, asking their God to absolve dead ancestors of their sins. They also prepare sweet desserts such as halva or zarda and give it out to children, the needy, and other members of their community.

Young Cricketers Sought

This year, Broadwindsor CC and Beaminster CC are jointly delivering a youth development section. They are currently looking for some more girls and boys who are interested in playing hardball competitive league cricket at under 14 & 16 ages this summer. The project is called ‘BCC2‘. More details are HERE.
Please get in contact if you are interested:
Email: secretary@broadwindsorcricket.co.uk or Chairman.BeaminsterCC@gmail.com
Telephone: 07494 841249 or
Message them through their Facebook page HERE.

Desperate to get back out playing, young cricketer, Jack Ronan hopes to play a major role in a victorious campaign by the Under-14’s and will play nine league games in addition to the Sunday games he plays for Broadwindsor 🙂

Broadwindsor Cricket Club made this week’s edition of the Bridport News highlighting their new car park which will be big enough for 20 cars. Dorset Council has approved a planning application for the change to a 885 square metre plot which will see the surface covered in crushed and rolled stone.

Not only have we managed to secure the future of the club by raising the money to buy the ground this winter, we also have some improvement projects planned.
We plan to finish the internal amenities in the pavilion, install mains electricity and have just had plans approved to construct a new car park – might even be building some nets soon too.
The new car park will be big enough for 20 cars and will be constructed in the adjoining field to the right as you come in the entrance to the ground. We are aiming to complete all these projects over the next few months!

Together we did it!

🚌🌈👏 TOGETHER WE DID IT!!! 👏🌈🚌

We are speechless with excitement and overwhelmed with thanks to all of our supporters!

We just now found out we’ve reached our target thanks to a contribution from the Power of Change Community Business Crowdmatch fund providing us with an additional £4,000 in funding pushing us over the line. We can now buy and kit out an outreach vehicle and make this happen at last!!

We wouldn’t have got here without all of you, our super crowd – you’ve showed compassion towards our community, dedication to sharing our message and an abundance of encouragement and heart – THANK YOU!

Our campaign remains open until next Friday and any additional donations will be used directly to fund additional staffing so that we can extend our reach and offer a wider programme to our community.

Thank you so many times. We can’t wait to celebrate with you soon! 🙏👏🙏👏

Lyrids Shooting Stars Peak Tonight

Tonight until dawn, the Lyrids reach their peak. The Lyrids can produce up to 18 meteors per hour at the peak, with occasional fireballs, producing up to 100 shooting stars an hour.

Make sure you are warm. Find a place with no or minimal light pollution, get comfortable and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Be prepared to wait. Look to the North East. Also high in the Eastern sky until dawn – by where the meteors are coming from – is the bright star Vega, the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra.

The annual meteor shower is derived from particles dropped by comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher) and will continue until the end of the month. The meteors come from comets’ debris exploding once it enter Earth’s atmosphere. Their disintegration causes the bright, fiery streaks across our sky.

The waxing gibbous moon will certainly not make it easy this year but as the moon sets at 5am – there will be just 45 minutes of darkness before dawn.

A Plea From Local Farmer Re: Dogs

Prompted by a lost dog plea (which was subsequently found), local farmer, Rachel Hayball of Speckets Knapp Lamb posted her plea on social media, on behalf of all farmers dealing with their new lambs at this time –
This is not aimed at anyone. Please do not take offence. I am so glad that today’s missing dog is back safe and sound.
Many of us [farmers] are getting very worried by the number of dogs going missing around Pilsdon and Lewesdon hill.  Areas where dogs should be on lead due to sheep grazing on and near the hills.
Obviously, no one ever intends to lose their dog. But it happens. Dogs can get disorientated when following a scent, they can see something and give chase. Or they can just lose sight of you.
Once they are lost and away from you, who knows what they get up to?
Even the best trained dogs in the world can become over aroused and start chasing and even attacking sheep. They may go up to sheep just being inquisitive and the sheep, being sheep, will run away. This is often enough to get a dog to chase.
A sheep doesn’t have to be attacked to die. Just being chased can cause them to drop dead from shock. They can also abort their lambs…
Newborn lambs also have no chance to get away from a dog.
Please, please keep your dogs on lead on and around Lewesdon Hill and Pilsdon Pen. We [Farmers] shouldn’t have to constantly worry about our livestock potentially being at risk and your dogs need to be kept safe too.
I am a dog lover. I spent years working with dogs. My dogs are well trained and guess what – they stay on lead unless we are in a secure area.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
Rachel Hayball

Happy 95th Birthday Your Majesty

Born on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in London, the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York, our Queen celebrates her 95th birthday today.

However, as the family are still in mourning, there will be no gun salutes at the Tower of London or Hyde Park which usually happens on this day. Neither will there be an official portrait of Her Majesty released.

The solitary image of our Queen attending her beloved husband’s funeral only 4 days ago touched us all. today, she will be remaining at Windsor Castle and have her family with her.  Our best wishes go out to her.

The Queen’s second, ceremonial birthday celebration is marked on the second Saturday in June, which this year falls on the 12th June.

The ceremony of an official monarch’s birthday has been in place since 1748, during the reign of King George II. His birthday fell in November, with the inclement autumn weather hampering his desire to mark the occasion with a large-scale public celebration, he made the decision to combine his celebration with Trooping the Colour, an annual military parade in the summer. The Queen initially marked her “official” birthday on the second Thursday of June, the same day as her father, King George VI. However, she changed it to its current position in 1959 after seven years into her reign.

She ascended to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25yrs, and surpassed her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria as Britain’s longest-reigning monarch in September, 2015.
