Congratulations To Kate Staff

Ex-manager of the White Lion Community Pub Ltd., Kate Staff very recently collected the above award: West Dorset CAMRA Pub Of The Year 2023.

Judging had taken place during November and December 2022 when the pub was secretly visited by 9 individual judges on separate occasions.

As Kate, Chloe and Louise no longer work at the pub, the award is Kate‘s to keep and the White Lion‘s will have a copy to display display in the pub. Kate dedicated the award to the late David Leader. The Staff’s won’t be progressing to the next stage but the White Lion Community Pub Ltd. will and we hope Rick Dyke and the Management Committee succeed in employing a new manager of similar high standards 🙂

As the Management Committee and volunteers continue to keep the pub open whilst a new management team are appointed, we send our congratulations and best wishes to Kate, who soon begins her new employment in the kitchen at Broadwindsor House and to Chloe and Louise with their futures.
If you’d like to volunteer at The White Lion in any way, please get in touch with Andrew Hookings at: andrewhookings@yahoo.co.uk or Rick Dyke at: rickdyke59@gmail.com.

Please continue to support our community pub.

Update On Tetrapak And Foil Recycling

Update from Hursey resident, Sara Dyke:

In response to my recent post on Broadwindsor.org, I am delighted to report that we now have a full rota of volunteers (including several on the reserve list!).

Firstly a massive thank you to those who are willing to continue to volunteer and to those who have stepped up to fill the gaps. Your help is hugely appreciated.

Secondly, as a community, it would be really helpful to continue to use this facility considerately and I would like to gently remind everyone that the volunteers are handling the recycling and transporting it in their own vehicles. If we could all follow the following guidelines it makes the job more pleasant. Please also see the photos as a reminder of what to recycle.

  • Please ensure the tetrapaks are CLEAN and FLATTENED to maximise bin space.
  • Please ensure the foil is CLEAN and FLATTENED for the same reason. If milk bottle lids can be put inside a larger foil tray if possible. This speeds up the process and prevents litter on windy days!
  • Crisp packets are NOT to be put in the foil recycling. Basically, if it doesn’t keep its shape when scrunched up, it cannot be included with the foil.
  • If you drive to shop at Morrison’s or visit Bridport Recycling Centre, you may want to consider taking your recycling there at the same time. There is also a foil recycling bin at Yarn Barton car park in Beaminster. This would free up space in the bins for those who don’t drive or who are unable to do their own.
  • Please feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts on 07840 128763 or saradyke60@gmail.com.

Please note that the bins are now to be located at the front of Comrades Hall in the car park area.

Thank you.
Sara Dyke.

All Change At The White Lion 2023

Thank you to Kate Staff and her daughters who worked their last shifts at the White Lion this weekend.

Now the Community Pub’s Management Committee have a posse of volunteers trained and ready to start tomorrow evening, fish ‘n’ chips night. Until new management staff have taken over, the volunteers will be keeping the pub open for all as follows:

  • Tuesdays 6-9pm (bring your fish and chips). 11pm on Folk Club nights
  • Thursdays 6-11pm
  • Fridays 6-11pm
  • Saturdays 11am-11pm (Warm Hub until 5pm – free tea and coffee and the day’s papers)
  • Sundays 12 noon to 9pm
These hours will be reviewed regularly, subject to volunteer availability and how much the pub is used by customers. The aim is to resume a limited food service on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes, as soon as they can.

If you’d like to volunteer in any way, please get in touch with Andrew Hookings at: andrewhookings@yahoo.co.uk or Rick Dyke at: rickdyke59@gmail.com.

Please continue to support our lovely pub.

Could You Help Broadwindsor Continue To Recycle?

Hursey resident, Sara Dyke is asking for your help:

As many of you are aware, the bins for the collection of foil and tetrapaks are now located in Comrades Hall car park. Historically this collection has been a great initiative, but, of late, a few issues have emerged which have severely threatened the continuation of this voluntary service.

I am very happy to coordinate this service going forward but before doing so would like to gauge the degree of will and engagement from our community for this to continue.

In order for this to run smoothly in the future we need to have a happy band of volunteers (ideally 11 plus me) so that the task of emptying the bins and taking the contents to either Morrison’s car park (which is easier as the receptacle for the tetrapak is larger) or Bridport recycling centre, becomes an annual event for many rather than an onerous task for a few.

As well as emptying the bins, the person whose “month” it is, needs to check that the bins are not overfilling. The rota has not always been filled, leaving gaps in collections which has contributed to unsightly litter. Unless I am able to populate a rota and reissue important guidelines for the community to follow, these bins will be withdrawn by the end of January.

Recycle! Please could you let me know on either on 07840 128763 or saradyke60@gmail.com if you are willing to continue to help or would like to volunteer your help. Or, if you would like a chat before you commit to get a better understanding of what is involved I am happy to discuss.

It would be a shame if this service folds as until Dorset Council have sufficient funds to offer a kerbside service it is up to us to do our own recycling of foil and tetrapak. I do need responses by Monday 23rd January at the latest please!

Thank you.

Sara Dyke.

More Volunteers Needed At Broadwindsor Community Stores

We all so appreciate our community village shop.  It simply wouldn’t function without the marvellous management team now led by Jane and,  just as importantly, the team of volunteers who smile and serve you when you go in 🙂

A healthy number of volunteers make it easier on all as individuals cover fewer shifts, or sometimes just the one.

It is an excellent way to learn new skills, feel productive and meet more people within the parish community.  An opportunity for you to give back to this community enterprise – it is fun too!

Full training is provided – contact Volunteer co-ordinator, Terri Small at: teri.woodland@gmail.com.

Recycling Bins Now In Situ

The Recycling bins have now been moved from Redlands Yard to the Comrades Hall Car Park.

They’re now at the back of the Hall by the ‘turning area’.

Thank you to Adrian & Dave for walking them down the road 🙂

Village Recycling Update

The recycling bins for tetrapaks and aluminium foil items are moving from Redlands Yard to the Comrades Hall car park.

  • Please take your recycling there from now on.
  • Please don’t put any other items in these bins – it is very unpleasant for volunteers!!

…Talking of which they urgently need more. Recently, two volunteers have left and now there are slots for the upcoming months not covered.

If you are able, please help. It isn’t difficult or time consuming… a trip to Bridport. What it does mean is that this service, which is so important, can remain local.

Cleaners Needed At The White Lion

We’re all impressed with how Kate, Chloe and Louise are running the White Lion 🙂

At the very first meeting in the Hall, it was stated that volunteers would be required – now is your opportunity to help…

They need as many as possible to create a fortnightly rota. Six people have signed up so far at the time of publishing.

The job entails general cleaning as required:

  • Bar & Hall floors
  • Ladies & Gents toilets

It takes two people two hours. Helpers are needed:

  • Tuesday – Friday, before 6pm
  • Saturday & Sunday, before 11am

If you feel that you can help – please leave your details with Lynne or John Staff – 01308 868584.

Last Jubilee Bunting Workshop – Friday, 1st April

Jacqui Sewell needs all bunting triangles back to the Comrades Hall tomorrow please.  Although Jubilee isn’t until June 2nd, she needs to count how many have been made, sort them into colours – with Emma House & her Girl Guides who will be helping with this and who are assisting with the colour themes.

On Friday 7th May, there is the huge task of sewing the triangles on to the header tapes, of which there are many meters – if you can help with this, please go along at 10am on Friday, 7thJacqui will take a couple sewing machines with her to the Comrades Hall.

This will be a remarkable accomplishment and decorate our village at the beginning of June 2022.

Any queries, please contact Jacqui on 01308 867145.
