Broadwindsor Fun Day To Be Held In June

Questionnaire update from Chairman of Broadwindsor Fun Group, Adrian Gray:

Earlier this month. the Fun Group hand delivered questionnaires to every house in Broadwindsor and Hursey plus a few to the wider community.

The purpose being to assess the community’s thoughts on holding events this year and to seek support in the administration of these. Indeed the group has had a great deal of success over the last few years bringing together various individuals and village groups to ensure that things are inclusive and community based.

I have now personally read every reply and would like to express my and the Fun Group’s gratitude to those who have taken the time to complete and return the forms. If anyone has not returned their form, you can drop it off at the shop so that their thoughts can be added to the mix. Whilst those received already are now undergoing further assessment, it is noted that several people have made great suggestions and a few offered to help at any event held. Indeed the positive nature of the replies is very appreciated. One person felt it appropriate use this platform to make a personal attack on me and the Fun Group. This individual also failed to make any constructive suggestions and lacked any moral courage by choosing to not say who they were.  I would appeal  to this person to make contact with me so that their grievances can be identified, discussed and hopefully a positive way forward be formulated. Their comments are at odds with other returns but should still be valued and considered.

We are still looking for more people to work with and possibly on, the planning team for events.  The current four people simply cannot bear the load alone.

Finally the headline finding is that people do not support an event in the village to celebrate the Coronation and favour an event in June. This is not to say that the Parish Council or another group may well run an event. We also need to consider some of the new suggestions made by some but again we need people to join the planning team.

Given the positive nature of the questionnaire returns, together with the lovely comments made personally to me and others I would suggest that the village is far from fractured as some may suggest. I optimistically look forward to more people coming on board.

Join the Big Garden Birdwatch, 27th-29th January

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is fun, free and for everyone. You don’t need a garden to take part!

Counting birds from your balcony, or your local park will play a vital role in helping the RSPB understand how UK birds are doing. Let’s look out for birds together on Friday 27th through to Sunday 29th January.

There are 3 things you have to do:

1. Watch the birds around you for one hour.
2. Count how many of each species of bird lands on your patch.
3. Go online and tell us what you saw.

Click HERE to sign up, take part and get your free guide.

Why is this important?

The fact that we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 50 years underlines that nature is in crisis. We see it in our own back gardens with house sparrows struggling and starlings undergoing a severe decline. As a conservation charity, your Birdwatch results help the RSPB monitor how our UK birds are faring in the face of the nature and climate emergency. But they can’t do it without your support.

Attracting birds to your garden:

With birds facing greater challenges due to the nature and climate emergency, every Birdwatch matters. So it’s time to get your patch ready for Birdwatch. Top up your bird table and fill the bird bath to the brim. Make sure to remove old food and clean your feeders weekly, as disease can be a serious issue for some species.
Greenfinch numbers have massively dropped due to a disease that spreads around contaminated feeders and water bowls, and chaffinches are now struggling. Click HERE for guidance on cleaning feeders to keep you and your garden birds safe.

Update On Tetrapak And Foil Recycling

Update from Hursey resident, Sara Dyke:

In response to my recent post on Broadwindsor.org, I am delighted to report that we now have a full rota of volunteers (including several on the reserve list!).

Firstly a massive thank you to those who are willing to continue to volunteer and to those who have stepped up to fill the gaps. Your help is hugely appreciated.

Secondly, as a community, it would be really helpful to continue to use this facility considerately and I would like to gently remind everyone that the volunteers are handling the recycling and transporting it in their own vehicles. If we could all follow the following guidelines it makes the job more pleasant. Please also see the photos as a reminder of what to recycle.

  • Please ensure the tetrapaks are CLEAN and FLATTENED to maximise bin space.
  • Please ensure the foil is CLEAN and FLATTENED for the same reason. If milk bottle lids can be put inside a larger foil tray if possible. This speeds up the process and prevents litter on windy days!
  • Crisp packets are NOT to be put in the foil recycling. Basically, if it doesn’t keep its shape when scrunched up, it cannot be included with the foil.
  • If you drive to shop at Morrison’s or visit Bridport Recycling Centre, you may want to consider taking your recycling there at the same time. There is also a foil recycling bin at Yarn Barton car park in Beaminster. This would free up space in the bins for those who don’t drive or who are unable to do their own.
  • Please feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts on 07840 128763 or saradyke60@gmail.com.

Please note that the bins are now to be located at the front of Comrades Hall in the car park area.

Thank you.
Sara Dyke.
