Full Moon – Sunday, 4th June

The last Full moon of Spring, the first of Summer is the Strawberry Moon.  The Moon will be full at 04.42hrs on Sunday morning so will appear its fullest on the Saturday evening.

Red-coloured moons get their hue from their proximity to the horizon. (The closer the moon is to the horizon, the more atmosphere its light rays must travel through, and the redder the moon appears).

June was traditionally the month for marriages – it is even named after the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. Following marriage comes the “honeymoon,” which give may give credence to one of this Full Moon’s names:

  • Blooming Moon is indicative of the flowering season.
  • Green Corn Moon and Hoer Moon suggest that it’s time to tend to young crops.
  • Birth Moon, referring to the time when certain animals are born in their region.
  • Egg Laying Moon and Hatching Moon are Cree terms that also hint at a time of many animal babies.
  • Honey Moon
  • Mead Moon

This year the Strawberry Moon will not be a supermoon as it is expected to be too far from earth. To be a supermoon it should be 360,000km or less away from Earth. Supermoons are often known to appear slightly larger than a normal Full Moon, up to 30% brighter and 17% larger, but in reality it seem to appear much the same, observed as a bright orb casting a slight golden tint.

New Outdoor Gym Equipment In Bernards’ Place

Photograph by Nathalie Roberts.
From Left to Right: Ross Heaver & Anthony Claiden from Bridport Round Table, Suzy Edgerley, Morgan Napier, Malcolm Heaver, Sophie Sinton, Chris Edgerley, Jill Maguire, Alice Bagg from Magna and new Chair of the Comrades Hall, Megan Jones.

Broadwindsor’s revamped Bernards’ Place has been enhanced by three new pieces of adult exercise equipment: the air skier, double air walker and rider have been installed in the heart of the village.
They complement challenging new play equipment and an oak-framed shelter which was put in last year by the Comrades Hall Committee after a major fund-raising campaign to transform the village green.

Two pieces of equipment were funded by locally-based Magna Housing Association and Bridport Round Table.

Megan Jones, Chair of the Comrades Hall Committee, said: ‘We’re extremely grateful to Magna and the Round Table for the sponsorship of the adult exercise equipment. It has added a new, inclusive dimension to Bernards’ Place.

Families are enjoying time together, exercising, playing and having fun. In these tougher financial times, having a free safe area for activities in the centre of the village is a big plus. It is so important to promote healthy options for all age groups.’

Ross Heaver, from Bridport Round Table, was brought up in the village. His father, Malcolm, led a team of volunteers who put together the shelter on the green.

Ross said: ‘It’s been an absolute pleasure to have been able to donate the funds for the outside Air Skier on Broadwindsor village green. Having grown up in the village it’s amazing to see such a high level of support from the local community, businesses and charities alike. Bernards’ Place is such an amazing spot for all to enjoy.

Alice Bagg, Magna Head of Customer Experience and Home Services, said: ‘We’re really pleased to be able to partly fund the new exercise equipment in Broadwindsor and proud to support people in local communities where our customers live to be active, healthy and enjoy time outdoors.

The gym equipment has been placed in between the new play area and the newly-opened up space at the bottom of the green, which is ideal for picnics and community events.

The Hall committee’s Village Green project received financial support from the National Lottery, Sport England, Dorset Council, Broadwindsor Group Parish Council, fundraising and donations from local people through a successful Crowdfunder campaign.

Said Megan: ‘It’s made a big difference to the heart of the village and we are so grateful to all those who have helped us create such a lovely space for everyone to use.

Sally’s 20th & Final Race For Life

Village resident Sally Sarling celebrates her 72nd birthday today 🙂 and we wish her many happy returns.

Sally will also be celebrating 20 years participation in the Race For Life, raising funds for Cancer Research UK,  taking part in the 5Km race in Poole on Saturday, 3rd June. That’s quite an accomplishment!

Sally recently announced that this would be her final year.  She began running in the Race For Life after both her parents and her badminton partner died from cancer.
1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years. Consistent progress is being made but improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further.
Please help Cancer Research UK improve results even faster by donating to Sally’s Just Giving page.

Thank you & good luck Sally!

Lisa & Stuart Take On Jurassic Coast Challenge

Village resident Lisa McKenzie is best known for her baking and cakes.  Today, she and her husband Stuart are raising funds for Parkinson’s UK by taking on the Jurassic Coast Challenge.

They will be walking 100km (66 miles) non-stop from Corfe Castle to Morrisons in Bridport. You can track their progress from the info page HERELisa‘s bib number is 2404 and Stuart’s is 2405.

You can still donate to Parkinson’s UK through Lisa‘s Just Giving page, HERE.

We wish them both the very best of luck 🙂

UPDATE:

And they did it! 😀 Lisa posted on social media afterwards…

Well … what an absolute rollercoaster of emotions that was!
After some horrific climbs I had mentally given up when we got to Lulworth at 42km. I was totally broken and just broke down and cried. With mum on standby, I mentally told myself that if I made it to half way in Weymouth then I could call it a day and still be bloody proud!
But thankfully we met (on another killer hill!) 4 absolute superstars who literally picked me up and made me believe again that I could get to the finish. To Claire, Joe, Nicky and Tim, wherever you are, I will be eternally grateful for your support and encouragement between Lulworth and Weymouth. Without you guys I never would have got any further!
To everyone we met along the way, who were so nice and told me I WOULD finish, even when I was 100% convinced I wouldn’t get there, thank you! Also to all you lovely lot who were tracking us and sending messages of encouragement, they made me cry but were so very appreciated!
Lastly the most thanks has to go to Stuart, I don’t think either of us would have got there without the other. We each had our low points, but got the other through. We made it!!
I don’t think the sense of achievement has quite sunk in yet … I’m sure once the pain subsides it will!
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated … you are all amazing and your donations definitely kept us going. I know that your money is already making such a difference to Parkinson’s UK.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! ❤️
