Old Village Shop Sold At Auction

Earlier this afternoon, the old village shop in the square sold for it’s guide price of £175,000 at Symonds & Sampson’s Property auction held in Sherborne. (More details of the property can be viewed HERE)

Alastair Boyd, with his wife Dee ran the shop for several years.  After Dee died, Alastair closed the shop and this led to the creation of our wonderful Broadwindsor Community Stores which opened in March 2013.

The Grade II Listed building has 3 bedroomed living accommodation above and a small garden at the rear. After lying empty for ten years, the property will require some modernisation and improvement.  With the necessary work that has to be done there together with the work going on at The White Lion – the look of Broadwindsor’s village square is rapidly changing.

We look forward to welcoming the new owner
and wish them every happiness in their new home 🙂

Thank you to Richard Thornborough for the photograph above which shows the village shop in the Edwardian era 🙂

Drimpton FC Thrash Ilminster FC, 8-1

Drimpton have moved into the semi finals of the Jack Venn Cup after an emphatic performance and result against Ilminster.
Match report:
The Greens wasted no time in getting their passing football going. Some of the passing was exquisite causing the visitors numerous problems early on. Adam Cody Boucher gave the hosts an early lead but were soon pegged back when the ball took a nasty bounce catching out the home defence and the Ilminster No 9 ran on to the ball poking home.
Drimpton then went up another gear and effectively finished the game with 2 further goals in the first half.
3 – 1 Drimpton half time.
The second half was a dominant performance with Drimpton playing some of their best football of the season. The one time passing and the movement off the ball was a joy to watch. Further goals were added by Adam Cody Boucher who got himself another hat trick, Pawel Ciereszko 2, OG, Josh Cousins and Frank Symonds completing the scoring.
Manager Andy Loudon added ” That was a very pleasing performance with us playing some lovely football. We were very ruthless in front of goal tonight and progress into the semi finals of the cup
The club have a very important fixture coming up this Saturday (9th April) when they host Shepton Beauchamp, the Greens will be hoping to get the point needed that will crown them champions of Divison 2.
Football
Kick off is at 14.30
and they would love to see as many people as possible cheering the Greens on.

Good Luck Drimpton FC!

Expect Those Country Smells By Fullers & Trusthams

We live in the countryside, we are used to farm vehicles on our roads and we adapt to those ‘country smells’ that visitors gag at… Here is a polite message from local farmers, Andrew & Tim Frampton:

The war in Ukraine has meant that artificial fertiliser prices namely ammonium nitrate has increased four fold in price and is now very difficult to get hold of as well .We have just signed a contact to rent the fields behind Fullers and Trusthams for another year and the ground is in desperate need of fertiliser .We usually use artificial fertiliser but this year are forced to use 🐄 🚽 so it may smell for a couple days before being absorbed and we just wanted to warn residents and apologise for any smell but it will only linger for a couple days. We hope residents will understand. Thank you.

Nature Art In Hursey Common

There’s some lovely nature art appearing in the fence posts around Hursey Common playing field 🙂

Is it faeries at work? Perhaps, but we like to believe that they are appearing to honour the spirit of David Leader and his work making Hursey Common so beautiful.

Thank you to Simon Emmerson for the photoraphs.

Tree Planted For Queen’s Canopy Project

Yesterday (Friday) afternoon a tree was planted in Bernards’ Place as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project.

Chairman of Broadwindsor Fun Group, Adrian Gray planted a crab apple (Malus sylvestris) Freya‘ by the ornamental cherry tree currently in blossom.  The project and site of the tree had all of David Leader‘s support and he was remembered once the tree was planted.

Crab apple trees do bear fruit.  The sweetly scented blossom is pollinated by bees and other insects. The blossom develops into small, yellow-green apple-like fruits around 2–3cm across. Sometimes the fruits are flushed with red or white spots when ripe. The fruit is eaten by birds, including blackbirds, thrushes and crows; mammals, such as mice, voles, foxes and badgers and we humans too.  They have an exceptionally high pectin and acid content which makes them ideal for setting fruit jams and jellies. They are sour when raw but have a tart and tangy flavour when cooked.  Raw crab apples are toxic to dogs.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate our Queen’s 70 years of service. Read more HERE.

The White Lion Sub-Group Now A ‘Community Sub-Committee’

In response to the many questions being asked on several occasions, it would appear that the sub-group have become a Community Sub-Committee and are creating another questionnaire

The White Lion Community Sub-committee:

The community sub-committee comprises Sara Dyke, Izzy Masey, Annie Bowman and Dorothy Rowe and has met 3 times to date. Their first meeting involved “brainstorming” every possible community use of the space within the pub both out of and within licensing hours.

From this meeting a draft consultation questionnaire was devised ready for distribution once the pub is open. The farming community was contacted and likewise Rev Jo for feedback and ideas for pub use.

It should be stressed that the intention is to complement the use of Comrades Hall rather than to compete with it.

The refurbishment of the pub will create a versatile area which can be used as a community space as well as a traditional pub, although the business’s long-term viability depends on it being a successful pub first and foremost and this remains our priority.

The sub-committee have also visited the Axminster Waffle House which runs as a community not for profit cafe and runs community groups and outreach work for community benefit which could be duplicated here in Broadwindsor.

The hope is to release the questionnaire once the pub has opened and have a community notice board within the pub for residents to also have their say. Collaboration with Kate regarding her time and ability to host/facilitate new ventures is also crucial.

The sub-committee is mindful of getting a community space absolutely right and will be thinking carefully about what can realistically be delivered, to start slowly and then gain momentum. The pub will be a truly community pub to be used by all as we have all worked so hard and donated so generously for this vision.
