Bull In Field – Gate Is Closed

A message from our local farmers 🙂

We have some younger animals in the lower fields at Lewesdon and the Angus bull, which is up in the higher fields, is desperately trying to get with them as he has done his business with his older girls.

The gate connecting the two groups has been pushed open by him a couple of times or left open unwittingly by walkers. We have put a chain and lock on it and ask if people could use the pedestrian gate in the east corner of the field if they are unable to climb over.

The ramifications of a big bull on young heifers is not a good outcome so hopefully people understand this temporary measure until the grass grows and we can move him elsewhere.

Many thanks,
The Frampton’s.

Expect Those Country Smells By Fullers & Trusthams

We live in the countryside, we are used to farm vehicles on our roads and we adapt to those ‘country smells’ that visitors gag at… Here is a polite message from local farmers, Andrew & Tim Frampton:

The war in Ukraine has meant that artificial fertiliser prices namely ammonium nitrate has increased four fold in price and is now very difficult to get hold of as well .We have just signed a contact to rent the fields behind Fullers and Trusthams for another year and the ground is in desperate need of fertiliser .We usually use artificial fertiliser but this year are forced to use 🐄 🚽 so it may smell for a couple days before being absorbed and we just wanted to warn residents and apologise for any smell but it will only linger for a couple days. We hope residents will understand. Thank you.

Full Moon – Wednesday, 16th February

The Full Moon is today at 16.57hrs.

Known by many as the Snow moon, due to the seasonal weather, it is also known as the Black Bear or Bear Moon: referring to the time when bear cubs are born.

About once every 19 years, February does not have a Full Moon, known as a Black Moon. In 2018, this was the case in most time zones. This can only happen in February, as this is the only month which is shorter than a lunar month. When this occurs, both January and March have two New Moons, instead of just one, creating a double Blue Moon.

Thank You From Zoe Raymond

You may remember 11yr old Zoe Raymond from Blackdown putting out a request at the end of September for your used stamps in memory of her Grandad Lloyd Curtis (You can read the original post HERE).

A happy Zoe delivered her first donation to Weldmar Hospice yesterday.

The total weight of the used stamps collected was 72 oz (just over 2 kg) which converted into a ÂŁ40 donation to the Weldmar Hospice.

Zoe continues to collect used stamps for her second donation. If you have any stamps (please leave at least 1cm of envelope around the stamp) please contact Zoe and her Mum, Sonia on 01460 30471 who will arrange their collection.

Thank you again for your support & well done Zoe!

Full Moon – Sunday, 19th December

The cold weather is upon us and appropriately, December’s Full Moon is most commonly known as the ‘Cold Moon’. The Moon will be full at 04.35am on Sunday, 19th December.

Other names that indicate the cold and snow given to this Full Moon are:

  • Drift Clearing Moon (Cree),
  • Frost Exploding Trees Moon (Cree),
  • Moon of the Popping Trees (Oglala),
  • Hoar Frost Moon (Cree),
  • Snow Moon (Haida, Cherokee),
  • Winter Maker Moon (Western Abenaki)
  • Moon When the Deer Shed Their Antlers (Dakota)
  • Little Spirit Moon (Anishinaabe).

This Full Moon has also been called the Long Night Moon (Mohican), as it rises during the “longest” nights of the year, which are near the December winter solstice.

In Europe, ancient pagans called the December Full Moon the “Moon Before Yule,” in honour of the Yuletide festival celebrating the return of the sun heralded by winter solstice.
