Happy St. David’s Day

St.David WindowThe only Welsh saint to be canonized by the Western Catholic Church, the feast of St. David is celebrated on 1st March each year.  Born on the Pembrokeshire cliffs into an aristocratic family, during a fierce storm approximately 1,500 yars ago, his date of birth is unknown but he died on 1st March 589 AD at 90-100 yrs old. He became a monk at a young age and is said to have founded a monastery close to where he was born. This area is now known as St Davids. Two pilgrimages to St David’s Cathedral are said to be akin to one pilgrimage to Rome. Allegedly, his last words were “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” – Do the little things.

The Feast of St. David is an opportunity to celebrate their traditional foods:

  • Welsh Rarebit – a hot cheese-based sauce served over slices of toasted bread.
  • Taffies – gingerbread shaped like a Welshman on a goat!
  • Cawl – an undefined soup usually containing lamb and leeks.
  • Welsh cakes – flatbreads sweetened with sugar & dried fruit, baked on a griddle.  Sometimes seen on sale in Broadwindsor Community Stores too!
  • Welsh lamb.
  • Bara Britha rich fruit tea loaf.

It used to be that the children of Wales were given a half day holiday on St David’s Day. It’s not a national holiday in the UK and in 2007, former PM Tony Blair rejected calls for it to become a public holiday.

DaffodilsThe wild daffodil is thought to have been a symbol of Wales since the 19th century. as a replacement for the humble leek which was introduced by the Romans during their invasion. It is interesting that the Welsh word for Leek (Cennin) and Daffodil (Cennin Pedr) are very similar.  A symbol of spring and symbolising new beginnings and rebirth, daffodils are a positive, life-affirming symbol, with a bright and joyful yellow colour. Daffodils are strong, resilient flowers that pop up year after year.

Welsh flag - DragonThe dragon appeared on the battle flags of various British soldiers on their way to Rome in the 4th century. It was later adopted by 5th century Welsh kings who were keen to show their authority following the Roman withdrawal.

Welsh Flag - St. DavidThe Flag of Saint David has been used as a flag representing Wales (as an alternative to the Red Dragon flag), in the same sense that the crosses of Saint George, Saint Andrewand Saint Patrick are used to represent England, Scotland and Ireland (of which they are respectively patron saints). It is also similar to the arms of the Diocese of St David’s.

There will be extra celebrations this year as Wales won the Triple Crown with victory over England in a dramatic Six Nations rugby match at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday afternoon.#Broadwindsor,#Burstock,#Blackdown,#Drimpton,#Hursey,#Kittwhistle,#Seaborough,#WestDorset,#Village,#StDavidsDay,#Wales,#Tradition,#Daffodil,#Leek,#Food,#TripleCrown,#BroadwindsorCommunityStores,#Flags,#2021,#BeSafe,#StaySafe

Yumptious Vegan Food Delivery

Vegan foods are not just for vegans. With over 30 years of experimenting with vegan food and flavours Yumptious produce delicious plant based savoury and sweet baked goodies, lovingly handmade in North Allington, Bridport, Dorset, using mostly organic ingredients. Yumptious goods do not contain unsustainable palm oil 🙂

In the kitchen is Lynne & her team.  Lynne set her business up just over 2 years ago; her mum passed away and she wanted a life change. Lynne took redundancy from her job working for a conservation charity and this gave her the funding she  needed. Lynne has been vegan for 32 years and so has been experimenting with recipes for a long time.  “I like to make food that is recognisable but a bit quirky. A good example of this is my Naan Bread Curry Pies, as the name suggests instead of a pastry case they have a naan bread on and they are HUGE! As I am a passion conservationist I wanted my food to be as ethical as possible, so I do not use any damaging unsustainable palm oil due to the devastation it causes to rainforests and I use organic ingredients where possible.

Our Shop Needs More Volunteers!

Our marvellous Community Stores is in desperate need as new volunteers are needed to cover staff and other volunteers being on holiday. The large white board to the right of the counter in the shop displays the names of people who have put their name down and volunteered to man the shop for a 2 hour shift next week – could YOU fill in any of the blanks to cover a 2 hour shift?  Once a shift has been agreed it is then the volunteer’s responsibility to arrange a relief should that be necessary.

You can be reassured that all the necessary measures are in place to keep you Covid-19 safe in the shop environment.
There is also a panic alarm fitted to ensure your safety.

Ready? Download an application form to volunteer HERE. Email your completed form to Volunteer Co-ordinator, Teri Small (her email address is on the form) or call into the shop and leave it there and speak to Kevin (Shop Manager) or if you prefer, phone him: 01308 867922.

Haven’t helped in the shop before?  Not confident in operating the till or debit card machines? This is NOT a problem. 🙂

Broadwindsor Community StoresAll new volunteers are supported by another experienced team member or a member of staff (Kevin, Jane & Margaret) – a “Buddy”.  You are given training and support to carry out the everyday tasks: either on the till, serving customers, or if that’s not for you, then help with administration, cleaning, or stock replenishment.
You can read and download their policies HERE which includes the Staff and Volunteer Handbook which outlines all the duties that must be undertaken in the successful daily running of the shop.

What do you get out of it?  Working as part of the team, you can:

‣ Participate in an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
‣ Increase your connection to the community.
‣ Feel productive.
‣ Use your skills and share your experience, interests and knowledge.
‣ Learn new skills.
‣ Make new friends.

Our award winning Broadwindsor Community Stores can only continue with your help.
Please don’t assume that because it’s only two hours, that there will be someone else to fill it because there isn’t!  Please help if you can.  Thank you.
