New Bench At Cross Keys Donated By The Late Julie Steele

Today, Sunday 21st July would have been Julie Steele’s 59th birthday but sadly she left us, too soon, on 12th December 2022 following a long struggle with cancer and its treatments.

Julie sat on the old bench – 2022

Julie loved living in Broadwindsor and said this was where she said she belonged. Julie was enthusiastically involved with many activities in the village, of note was her role as President of the local W.I. group who described her as “a real leading light at our WI.

Julie frequently rested at the old bench at Cross Keys, which is across the road from the war memorial, en route to our village shop or visiting friends.
One of Julie’s final arrangements was to choose, purchase from her estate and donate a new bench which is now situated there.

Thank you to Martin Burt for putting it in place 🙂

Soon to be added is a memorial plaque which reads:

In Memory Of Julie Steele
1965 – 2022
A Much Loved Friend & Broadwindsor Resident
Greatly Missed, Never Forgotten

The next stage of the ‘facelift’ will happen once the wild flowers have died back. The grass will then be cut and a rose bed will be put in which, once in place, the W.I. have kindly agreed to maintain ❤

Julie was laid to rest in St. John the Baptist church graveyard
on 6th January 2023.

21.07.65 -12.12.22

❤ Happy Heavenly Birthday Julie
& Thank You! ❤

Broadwindsor Community Film Club In Need Of New Organisers

An announcement from our volunteers at Broadwindsor’s Commuity Film Club

We have been lucky as a village to have a monthly Film Club at the Comrades Hall for some years now.  There is a small team of volunteers who work behind the scenes so that we can deliver a film each month for everyone to enjoy.  However, after some consideration, both Emma Myers and myself have decided that after nearly 5 years of being involved in Film Club, it is time for us to step down, have a rest and give new volunteers the chance to keep this valued group going forward.
The new subscription year is due in November 2024, so the October film will be both mine and Emma’s last for the Film Club.

All of us in the film club team bring different skills to the table, whether it be technical support, organising admin, or running the bar and helping out on the night.  If anyone would like to be involved and join our film club team, please feel free to  contact either Emma (broadwindsorem@gmail.com) or Margaret (07796 454203) to see where your skills could be put to good use.

Lastly, I would like to express my personal thanks to all those in our film club team who have faithfully helped out over the years.  Let’s now look forward to the continuation of film club for everyone’s enjoyment.

Margaret Wing

Our sincere thanks to Emma & Margaret!

Reduced Speed Limit Finally Approved

The Parish Council has for many years petitioned Dorset Council to reduce the speed limit on the B3163 past Broadwindsor Cricket Club and to the base of Clan Hill, which is currently 60 mph, reducing abruptly to 20 mph and introduce a transitional limit of 40 mph to ensure greater safety for all road users.

Last night, the Parish Council were delighted to report that this request has now been approved by Dorset Council.

The poor state of our roads and signage was raised as a matter to be discussed at their next meeting and they will be reviewing signs across the Grouped Parish over the coming months.

If you do see a sign which is not in good working order or have concerns about a particular part of the highway, please do get in contact: hello@broadwindsorgroup.gov.uk.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Monday, 9th September, 7.30pm at Drimpton Village Hall.  All are welcome.

Broadwindsor’s Bells Ringing This Week

This morning (8th July) at 10am a visiting band will attempt to ring a Quarter Peal which will last approximately 20 mimutes 🙂

On Thursday, 11th July, there is a wedding in St. John the Baptist church at 2pm.  A team will raise the bells some time in the morning ready to ring as the happy couple leave the church following the ceremony.

Our congratulations to them both.

Liberal Democrats Win West Dorset Vote

The results of the general election in Dorset’s five constituencies have been confirmed.

The results were as follows:

  • South Dorset – Lloyd Hatton, Labour (gain)
  • West Dorset – Edward Morello, Liberal Democrat (gain)
  • North Dorset – Simon Hoare, Conservative (hold)
  • Mid Dorset & North Poole – Vikki Slade, Liberal Democrat (gain)
  • Christchurch – Christopher Chope, Conservative (hold)

The overall turnout was 70.1% (53,228 ballots from electorate of 75,959)
(as reported on Dorset Council’s website)

For the first time ever, West Dorset is no longer a Conservative seat after the Liberal Democrats pulled off this historic win.

Pre-election, Edward Morello‘s promise read:
“West Dorset is everything that is great about Great Britain. Thriving market towns, historical monuments, beautiful beaches, and a beating agricultural heartland. We must stand up for our way of life if we want to protect it. We have been ignored and underfunded by a Conservative government in Westminster and a Conservative-run Dorset Council for years. They’ve taken our buses and NHS dentists; stopped picking up the litter and tidying the verges; cut services and raised taxes; and abandoned the elderly. If we want a better deal for West Dorset we need change. I promise to work every day to bring back services and protect those things that make West Dorset the wonderful place that it is.”

Edward Morello released a statement earlier today on social media:
A huge thank you to the voters of West Dorset for placing your trust in me, and to the many many people who worked incredibly hard to make this a reality.

Here’s hoping… for all of us! 🙂

The Broad Palate – July ’24

Salad Days –  a trio of salads, ideal for barbecues – no lettuce required 😁.

Watermelon, Feta and Mint Salad – serves 3 to 4
N.B. This also makes a great summer breakfast!

  • ½ a large watermelon, chilled
  • 200g block feta cheese
  • 1 mugful of mint leaves, washed and coarsely chopped
  • Black pepper and olive oil (extra virgin preferably)

Method:

You don’t need exact quantities, though – go by eye.
Chop melon flesh into generous bite sized chunks, spread out onto a large platter.
Sprinkle the crumbled feta over, then the mint.
Season with black pepper and a drizzle of olive oil, and serve ASAP.

3 ‘O’ Salad – serves 4

  • 1 small red onion, peeled
  • 4-5 large oranges
  • ½-ž  jar pitted black olives

Method:

This is best made a couple of hours before serving, and left to marinate.
Halve and thinly slice the red onion into fine half-moons. Remove the skin and pith from the oranges using a sharp knife, and cut into segments (flesh only), reserving any juice.
Place the onion, orange segments and olives into a shallow serving bowl along with any remaining juice.
Finally, just before serving, sprinkle with a little sea salt and a drizzle of olive oil if desired.

Mexican Corn Salad (Esquites) – serves 4

  • 1 bag frozen sweetcorn, defrosted
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream or plain yogurt
  • Juice and zest of one lime
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 4-5 spring onions, finely sliced
  • 1 red pepper, finely chopped
  • 100g feta, crumbled (add more if desired)
  • 1 small bunch coriander, chopped, leaves only
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon caster sugar or to taste
  • Pinch chilli flakes, to taste

Method:

For the dressing, combine the mayo,  yogurt or sour cream, garlic, lime zest and juice.
In a hot frying pan, dry fry the sweetcorn, watching it like a hawk until it’s nicely charred but not too blackened. Transfer to a large bowl.
Add all the other ingredients and mix well.
Garnish with lime wedges and extra coriander if desired. Serve at room temperature.

Many thanks to Ann Shaw 🙂

Bon Appetit!

Anatomy Of A Fall (15)

Directed & Co-written by Justin Triet
