The Broad Palate – August ’24

Daveburgers (makes 8)

(No prizes for guessing who makes these in our house)
Get the brollies out – it’s barbecue season! The flavour of these beauties is elevated by the caramelised onions – well worth the extra effort.
I’d recommend making a big batch of these onions – freeze for using later on top of burgers, hot dogs, as a pizza topping or with cheese on toast.  The burgers freeze well, individually wrapped in cling film. (When defrosting, unwrapping before they’re thawed makes life easier.)

  • 1kg beef mince or 50/50 beef and pork mince (around 15% fat),
  • 2 large onions, quartered and thinly sliced,
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano,
  • 1 tbsp dark brown sugar,
  • Good splash of balsamic vinegar,
  • 2 tbsps olive oil,
  • salt and black pepper

Method:

Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and add the onions, along with a good pinch of salt to draw out the moisture and help prevent burning. Lid on, cook gently for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
When softened, add the sugar and balsamic and continue to cook until well reduced, browned and completely soft. Add a splash of water if they start to stick.
Allow to cool, then combine with the mince and season well with salt and black pepper before dividing into eight and shaping into burgers. (We use a burger press, but not essential.)
Cover and chill in the fridge before cooking, separated by squares of greaseproof paper, or freeze for later (see above).

Summer Fruits Cake (serves 6-8)

This is a little like the French Moelleux – basically a soft sponge used as a vehicle for any seasonal fruit glut, and is very adaptable. I like to use nectarines, but you could use peaches, apricots, cherries (stoned), or plums if you prefer something less sweet. You will need an 8-9 inch tin, preferably springform, greased and the bottom lined with greaseproof.

  • 3 or 4 nectarines (stoned and sliced into segments),
  • 70g plain flour,
  • 110g ground almonds,
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder,
  • 0.5 tsp salt (omit if using salted butter),
  • 200g caster sugar,
  • 140g soft butter,
  • 2 large eggs or 3 medium (room temperature),
  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt (gives a nice, soft crumb),
  • 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract,
  • 2 tbsps Demerara or granulated sugar.

Method:

Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan/Gas 4.
Place all ingredients except the fruit and Demerara sugar in a large bowl and mix until just combined (don’t overdo it!).
Pour into prepared tin and smooth top.
Arrange the fruit over the top, ensuring that the slices are away from the edge of the tin, and sprinkle the Demerara sugar on top.
Bake in centre of oven for around 45 minutes (check after 35)  or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.
Serve warm or at room temperature.

Many thanks to Ann Shaw 🙂

Bon Appetit!

New Bench At Cross Keys Donated By The Late Julie Steele

Today, Sunday 21st July would have been Julie Steele’s 59th birthday but sadly she left us, too soon, on 12th December 2022 following a long struggle with cancer and its treatments.

Julie sat on the old bench – 2022

Julie loved living in Broadwindsor and said this was where she said she belonged. Julie was enthusiastically involved with many activities in the village, of note was her role as President of the local W.I. group who described her as “a real leading light at our WI.
To read Julie’s full Eulogy presented by her friend, Cath Booth – click HERE.

The old bench at Cross Keys junction.

Julie frequently rested at the old bench at Cross Keys, which is across the road from the war memorial, en route to our village shop or visiting friends.
One of Julie’s final arrangements was to choose, purchase from her estate and donate a new bench which is now situated there.

The new bench at Cross Keys junction

Thank you to Martin Burt for putting it in place 🙂

Soon to be added is a memorial plaque which reads:

In Memory Of Julie Steele
1965 – 2022
A Much Loved Friend & Broadwindsor Resident
Greatly Missed, Never Forgotten

The next stage of the ‘facelift’ will happen once the wild flowers have died back. The grass will then be cut and a rose bed will be put in which, once in place, the W.I. have kindly agreed to maintain ❤

Julie was laid to rest in St. John the Baptist church graveyard
on 6th January 2023.

21.07.65 -12.12.22

❤ Happy Heavenly Birthday Julie
& Thank You! ❤

Broadwindsor Community Film Club In Need Of New Organisers

An announcement from our volunteers at Broadwindsor’s Commuity Film Club

We have been lucky as a village to have a monthly Film Club at the Comrades Hall for some years now.  There is a small team of volunteers who work behind the scenes so that we can deliver a film each month for everyone to enjoy.  However, after some consideration, both Emma Myers and myself have decided that after nearly 5 years of being involved in Film Club, it is time for us to step down, have a rest and give new volunteers the chance to keep this valued group going forward.
The new subscription year is due in November 2024, so the October film will be both mine and Emma’s last for the Film Club.

All of us in the film club team bring different skills to the table, whether it be technical support, organising admin, or running the bar and helping out on the night.  If anyone would like to be involved and join our film club team, please feel free to  contact either Emma (broadwindsorem@gmail.com) or Margaret (07796 454203) to see where your skills could be put to good use.

Lastly, I would like to express my personal thanks to all those in our film club team who have faithfully helped out over the years.  Let’s now look forward to the continuation of film club for everyone’s enjoyment.

Margaret Wing

Our sincere thanks to Emma & Margaret!

Reduced Speed Limit Finally Approved

The Parish Council has for many years petitioned Dorset Council to reduce the speed limit on the B3163 past Broadwindsor Cricket Club and to the base of Clan Hill, which is currently 60 mph, reducing abruptly to 20 mph and introduce a transitional limit of 40 mph to ensure greater safety for all road users.

Last night, the Parish Council were delighted to report that this request has now been approved by Dorset Council.

The poor state of our roads and signage was raised as a matter to be discussed at their next meeting and they will be reviewing signs across the Grouped Parish over the coming months.

If you do see a sign which is not in good working order or have concerns about a particular part of the highway, please do get in contact: hello@broadwindsorgroup.gov.uk.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Monday, 9th September, 7.30pm at Drimpton Village Hall.  All are welcome.
