The White Lion – Update #11

The meeting of The White Lion Management Committee on 16th March opened with a period of reflection and silence following the terrible news of David Leader’s death. Like the rest of the community, the committee is devastated by the loss of this outstanding man. We are determined to realise David’s vision for The White Lion and work together to make it reality, as a fitting tribute to David.

Thought is now being given about how best the White Lion can remember David.

The following is a summary of the meeting:

Election of officers:

There was unanimous support for Rick Dyke as the new chairman and Margery Hookings as vice-chairman. She will also take over from Rick as minutes secretary. Charles Ouin to act as company secretary.

Feedback from Customer Workshop:

The committee is grateful to Dorothy Rowe for running the customer workshop, which was very well received. She will do a follow-up workshop in due course. Sandra, who is DPS trained, ran a licensing workshop. Kate will work to Sandra’s instructions.

Last orders will be called at 10.45pm, with drinking until 11pm. This needs to be consistent and can be monitored further down the line and can be extended for special occasions.
We will operate a ‘Challenge 25’ policy, a retailing strategy that encourages anyone who is over 18 but looks under 25 to carry acceptable ID when buying alcohol.

Kitchen equipment:

A list of kitchen equipment has been identified and is being sourced.

Trees on the bank:

Due to be felled on March 23rd/24th. Committee members and volunteers will be available on those days.

Refurbishment:

  • Grateful thanks to Pip Cadwell for doing a visual survey of the chimneys.
  • Malcolm Heaver is continuing his work on the back bar, with John Staff laying the stone in the hearth and slate near the bar.
  • John Heys is liaising over extra sockets, USB points and pendant lights.
  • Some furniture has been purchased and is being stored by a local resident in a dry outbuilding.
  • Dave Smith Heating and Plumbing, who was working in the village, promptly stepped in when water from a leaking radiator upstairs flooded the bar on Monday morning. He is not charging for the call out or his time. 🙂

The management committee meets regularly as work continues on the refurbishment of The White Lion so it can reopen as a community pub. The aim is to open the bar in time for Easter with the first food offering a week or two later.

At the last meeting on 11/3/22, the following was discussed:

Membership:

Certificates issued to all original committee members with a further 100 on the membership register still to be issued.  Subsequent applications online will be incorporated into the register after 18th March when online applications close.

Customer workshop:

Village resident, Dorothy Rowe will be working with staff team and some volunteers from management committee.

Kitchen equipment:

Broadly aligned on what we need. There are a few different possible suppliers. Agreed to roll this over to next week.

Financial report:

  • We will ask Palmers for a current copy of the inventory and value.
  • Agreed to appoint a stock taker who will visit quarterly, provide analysis and help set prices.
  • Till system – appoint Electrotech at a cost of £22.50 per week. Data cable from bar to kitchen advisable.
  • Utilities – Paragon still working on a deal.
  • PaymentSent card machine will be integrated with till. CC charge – 0.95%. 0.37% for debit cards. Machine costs £15 per month.
  • Cellar training.
  • Meeting to decide on product range.

Palmers’ building responsibilities:

2 damp patches and broken slates.  Workmen have replaced crash lock on back door, looked at damp patches and think may need scaffolding to fix, replaced tiles. Need to borrow a drone to take photo evidence of source of leak.

Trees on bank to be dealt with – 23rd and 24th March.

Refurbishment:

Detailed discussions around the back bar. Wall behind bar has been prepared, panelling ready for painting, old door to rear corridor has gone and been filled. Slabs for hearth and continuation of passageway have been sources, floor needs levelling, paint needs ordering.

Kate has cleaned some of the wall lights and fitted dimmable bulbs. Lights for over bar and six dining chairs have been bought. Two large farmhouse tables, two leather easy chairs and a coffee table have been donated. Furniture being stored in a local garage. Double plugs plus USBs in hand. New radiator ordered.

This weekend’s profits (and Tuesday, 15th) from the Comrades Arms are being donated to the Ukranian Humanitarian Appeal.

Friday night, the Comrades Arms raised £250.00.
Palmers Brewery also donated a barrel of IPA, soft drinks and bottled cider.
Saturday night, the Comrades Arms raised £98.50.

Comrades Arms To Donate Profits To Ukranian Appeal This Weekend

The pop-up bar, affectionately known as The Comrades Arms will be donating all profits from their sales on Friday 11th, Saturday 12th and Tuesday, 15th March to The Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

The bar will be run on these nights by all members of the White Lion Management Committee.

Remember, you can take your items to donate to the Comrades Hall on Friday morning 10am – 12 noon.
Donations can also be taken to Fullers Community Hall, Thursday, 10am to 12noon and also Friday 10am to 12noon.

Well Done Broadwindsor

Thank you and well done to those who dropped items off at the Comrades Hall this morning for the Ukranian Aid project being led by Tom Littledyke at the Shave Cross Inn.

All of the items were loaded into Tom’s van ready for sorting and distribution prior to his trip next Monday. Read more HERE.

More donations will be taken across this Friday, 11th in time for Monday.  Please bring your items to the Comrades Hall between 10am – 12 noon.

Donations can also be taken to Fullers Community Hall, Thursday, 10am to 12noon and also Friday 10am to 12noon.

Tom’s Group are founding a Charity. The Order of the Shave Cross. They’d like to organize it as a group you join and on reward you’d receive a Personalized glass, personalized clicker and a Jacket (with monk accessories). Keep an eye out and you will be told when it’s live.

The Place I Love – Now On Film

James Harrison has now released his 7 minute video production of The Place I Love project. He still has lots of footage that didn’t make the final film which will be available a bit further down the line.

Led by Margery Hookings on behalf of Windrose Rural Media Trust, the project was funded by Dorset AONB, Dorset Council and Broadwindsor Group Parish Council.

Help Our International Community

The winning slogan to define Broadwindsor was “Where Community Matters”.   We are extending this to our International community to help those directly affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. To protect people caught up in this crisis, in Ukraine and its bordering countries.

Villagers Jacqui Sewell and Wendy Shields are asking you to take your items down (see below what’s requested) to the Comrades Hall either on Tuesday, 8th or Friday, 11th – in the morning from 10am – 12noon.  They will then transport them to Tom Littledyke‘s cellar at the Shave Cross Inn where they are being sorted and ready to load up for transport to the Ukraine.

Tom Littledyke, landlord of the Shave Cross Inn made the headlines last week with his inspiring trip to help those caught up in the crisis. There is a meeting on Wednesday, 9th at 8pm at the Shave Cross Inn which will also be streamed live on Facebook. As well as discussing what’s happened and what their plan is, Tom is organising a convoy of vehicles to travel to the Ukraine on Monday, 14th March departing at midday from the pub., planning to be back home by Saturday, 19th March.  At the time of publishing, it is estimated ten vehicles will be involved. More are expected by Monday 14th. 

Tom welcomes more help but cautions people to talk to their loved ones and to remember that you will be entering a war zone. Anyone wishing to take part must be over 25 years old for minibus insurance purposes.

With the money donated, which includes a vast donation from an anonymous doner from Lyme Regis, they intend to purchase 2 x ambulance vehicles and 2 x 4×4 vehicles.  A large part of the group’s project is to ferry refugees from the train stations to the border.

Broadwindsor’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Only 13 weeks remain until the nation begins to celebrate our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022.

Broadwindsor Fun Group are very busy organising several events which include:

  • Bunting! And lots of it – over 700 triangles already 🙂 The next workshop Friday, 4th March at 10am at Comrades Hall. More HERE,
  • The Beacon ceremony at Broadwindsor Allotments on the evening of Thursday, 2nd June.
  • Stalls, Fun and Games, a BBQ and live entertainment on Saturday 4th.
  • A Choir singing the Queen’s celebratory song.
  • A Jubilee Picnic on Sunday, 5th June from 1pm which will follow the church’s service at 12 noon.

Previous stall holders should have received an invitation to participate this year.  Anyone else interested should contact bwfunday20@gmail.com or speak directly with a Fun Group committee member.  The Core committee are:

Chris Loder MP Makes National News

Christopher Lionel John Loder, MP representing West Dorset made national news at the end of last month for unfavourable reasons after his recent comments on Twitter:

This is surprising as he is a patron of the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, whose aim is to help advance farm animal welfare. He did indeed introduce his Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill in the House of Commons on 5th February 2020 and it was passed on 29th April 2020.

In his own defence, he tweeted again the following day directing people to an article in The Scotsman, quoting Domnhall Macsween, who works on a community-run estate on the Isle of Lewis, who stated “Shows like Countryfile and Chris Packham have romanticised the idea of rewilding for an urban audience.”

However, Duncan Orr-Ewing, head of species and land management at the RSPB, stated “Lambs die for many reasons and the sea eagles should not be treated as the scapegoat,” he said, claiming that they feed mainly on fish and seagulls. “What’s being said about them attacking livestock is inflammatory and people are basing their opinions on what they perceive to be the case rather than reality.”
There were 137 cases of confirmed raptor persecution in 2020, according to the RSPB.

The eagle went extinct in the UK in the early 20th century after they were continually poisoned and shot by gamekeepers. It was one reintroduced on the Isle of Wight, where a successful programme has been taking place since summer 2019. The Guardian newspaper then published his comments disclosing that Chris Loder’s 2019 election campaign benefited from a £14,000 donation from the Ilchester Estates, which runs shoots in West Dorset. The estates are run by the honourable Mrs. Charlotte Townshend, an aristocrat worth almost £500m who has both farming and shooting interests. including Chesil Beach, the Fleet and Abbotsbury Swannery. Mrs. Townshend also declares that she is the only person other than the Queen who is allowed to own swans.

Chris Loder told Guardian reporter, Helena Horton, “Any suggestion that I have been unduly influenced in this view is completely wrong.”

White-tailed eagles are coastal birds that feed primarily on fish, and occasionally on carrion (dead flesh). It is highly unlikely that white-tailed eagles would be guilty of killing lambs, as he falsely claimed. However, it is even more embarrassing than you might imagine. The photographer who took the photos illustrating the article that Chris Loder tweeted, Peter Cairns, got in touch with the MP to explain that the photos had been staged: “As the photographer behind two of these images, I’d recommend you establish the circumstances before using them as evidence. Both are staged for an editorial story using a captive eagle and a dead lamb. Just so you know.”
